Flamborough North Landing
North Landing is a paradise for pooches. It’s the smallest of four beaches in the seaside village of Flamborough and is one of the best-loved dog-walking areas in the region.
Visitors must park at the top of the beach – it's a steep walk down and you aren’t allowed to drive closer, as the road is for traffic pulling licensed fishing boats only. It’s worth the effort though, as there’s lots of open space for you and your dog to play when you get there. The scenery is spectacular too – the impressive chalk cliffs and grassy hills are a sublime backdrop for an afternoon walk.
The stunning sand and pebble beach is canine-friendly throughout the year, so you’re welcome to visit together in all seasons. There’s plenty to do around Flamborough for all the family, not just the dog. Have a look at the 9 Top Things to do in East Yorkshire.
Bridlington
Outside the summer season (May 1–September 30), dogs are allowed on both Bridlington beaches without any restrictions. During summer, they have free range on the North Beach beyond the coastguard station, and on the South Beach, they can be walked between the south side of the South Pier and the east side of Princess Mary Promenade. In both cases, clear signs are on display to tell you where dogs are allowed and not allowed.
Of the two options, South Beach is a glorious stretch with over a mile of soft golden sand and it’s quieter than its northern counterpart – all the better for letting your dog have a good run along the shoreline. There’s also a breathtaking view over Bridlington Bay, and if you fancy extending your stroll (you certainly won’t get any complaints from the dogs) you can access Bempton Cliffs and walk to Flamborough Head. Wilsthorpe
Dogs are permitted on Wilsthorpe Beach – a lesser-known stretch of coastline sandwiched Bridlington and Fraisthorpe – all year without any restrictions at all. Its long stretch of sand is easily accessible for families and their canine companions as it is backed by grassy dunes rather than cliffs. However, wheelchair users and other visitors with impaired mobility are recommended to use the slipway, which is steep and can get slippy.
Part of the beach’s charm is the lack of visitor facilities – there are public loos open throughout the year and a small café that runs in summer. Out of season, you’ll need to pack a picnic if you’re intending to spend the day there; if you need to keep children occupied, Bridlington’s cafés and pubs are only 10 minutes’ drive away.
Fraisthorpe
This is one of the best dog-friendly beaches in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and one that has zero restrictions for man’s best friend. The flat sandy beach is a fantastic place for your beloved pet to run, play and jump for what feels like forever (just like they do in their dreams).
There are splendid views over Bridlington Bay, and on a clear day you should be able to see the Flamborough coastline in the distance. You’ll probably also notice some large concrete tank blocks on the beach too – these are the remains of pill boxes used as sea defences in World War II.
Whether you’re here to take a stroll, breathe in the fresh air or go wild in the waters, there are lots of options for the pawfect day for you both at Fraisthorpe Beach.
Hornsea
With a long shingle-and-sand shoreline, Hornsea is another happily dog-friendly beach with no restrictions at all between October and April. In May through to September, dog-exclusion zones come into effect forbidding them from the section of beach in front of the Marine pub down to the Sands Lane slipway. However, there’s a long promenade backing this section beach where you can walk your pets all year around as long as they are on a lead.
The beach never gets too busy – especially in winter – and there’s lots of room for stick or ball throwing as well as general running around with younger kids. And when you’ve all had your exercise, there are plenty of facilities along the prom, including fish and chip shops, cafés with views over the sea and amusement arcades.
You can park the car at Sands Lane or Morrow Street, and the beach has an accessible ramp for anyone with mobility issues.
