  • Family-friendly rural park across 600 acres of rural Virginia
  • A 20-minute drive to Fredericksburg; wineries and battlefields nearby
  • Lots of activities on site including archery, fishing and kayaking
Intrigued by the idea of a wilderness stay and a whole lot of outdoor activities, but also keen to keep access to all the essential trappings of modern life? Gather your tribe and make your way to Virginia’s Wilderness Presidential Resort for an excellent mix of all the above. Come along here and you’ll be staying at a fabulous 600 acres of rural space on the banks of a pair of lakes and filled with mature woodland. This park has the secluded atmosphere of a truly remote getaway, but in fact it’s easily accessed from the main road, about 10 minutes’ drive from the aptly named local town of Wilderness. Adventure seekers of all ages should be in their element here, with a whole lot of exciting activities to try out at the park. Where will you start? Perhaps with kayaking, paddleboarding and pedal boats on the lake? Hikes through the woods? Clambering up the adventure ropes course? Competitive types can join in with games of disc golf, tennis, miniature golf or Knockerball (like football played while wearing a large inflatable sphere, for the uninitiated), and there’s also basketball sessions in the gym or archery lessons outside. And if that all sounds a little exhausting, perhaps just plan to go fishing in the lake or have swims in the indoor or outdoor pools. Of course the wilderness experience stretches to cooking in the open air, and you’ll be able to use the shared barbecues or light up a campfire for such things (a country store is about five minutes’ drive away for all the essentials).

Local attractions

Once you’ve explored your own wilderness on site, set your sights on more spectacular scenery with a trip to Shenandoah National Park (an hour’s drive) and perhaps a drive along the spectacular Skyline Drive. More adventure awaits at Virginia Outdoor Center (20 minutes) as well, with river rafting and tubing outings. Time to take it easy instead? Take a history-tinged wander around Chancellorsville Battlefield (five minutes) or Wilderness Battlefield (10 minutes) or try a meal or tasting at one of the local wineries or breweries – Bacchus Winery, Eden Try Winery and 6 Bears and a Goat Brewery are all within 20 minutes’ drive. Over in Fredericksburg (20 minutes) there’s a sense of history in places like Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, the James Monroe Museum and Chatham Manor, plus several good places to get a meal or a drink.
