  • Peaceful family campsite edging the Grosne River in the Saône-et-Loire
  • Abbey of Cluny 20 minutes’ drive; Route des Grands Crus 50 minutes
  • Sports courts and fishing; bistro restaurant; shops 10 minutes’ drive
If you’re looking to taste fine wines or discover the religious architecture of the Saône-et-Loire region, haste ye to Camping de Messeugne. Bordering the Grosne River in the rural hamlet of Messeugne, the site is 50 minutes’ drive from the start of the Route des Grands Crus of Burgundy in Santenay, and 20 minutes from the Romanesque Abbey of Cluny. So what’s available at this low-key, leafy and family-friendly site? There’s a playground to keep active youngsters busy, and you can challenge family or new-found friends to hard-fought battles on the pétanque or volleyball courts. Pack up a picnic to eat on the river banks, go fishing, snooze in the sun, cool off with a dip in the water… The choice is yours. In high season, a whole roster of events and themed evenings kick off in the bistro – where major sporting events are also televised – which opens early for breakfast (as well as a takeaway bread service; order the night before). It stays open all day for sharing plates of regional cheeses and cured meats, as well as woodfired pizzas with all sorts of tasty toppings. If you’d rather keep catering matters to yourselves, pick up barbecue provisions (and a decent bottle of Burgundy) from the delis in Saint-Gengoux-le-National or Cormatin, both less than 10 minutes’ drive.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Posto immerso nel verde, ambientazione stupenda. Piazzole molto grandi. Silenzio. Servizi igienici abbastanza nuovi e putili.

Disliked: Mancanza di sapone e spesso di carta igienica nei bagni. Poca comprensione dell'inglese da parte del personale del bar.

Local attractions

A drive of 55 minutes takes wine buffs to the start of the Route des Grands Crus in Santenay; from there you can meander north to tour prestigious vineyards in famed villages like Gevrey-Chambertin (an hour and 10 minutes’ drive) and Nuits-Saint-Georges (55 minutes), or push the boat out to visit the fine-dining restaurants and wine caves in pretty Beaune (55 minutes). A brace of historic castles await your visit closer to base camp: elegant 17th-century Château de Cormatin (five minutes) is all gilded, sumptuous apartments and formal gardens, while medieval Sercy is open for tours of its old kitchens, chapel and water gardens. After exploring the peaceful cloisters and admiring the Burgundy views from the Tour des Fromages in the Abbey of Cluny (20 minutes), spend a bit of time in Cluny village itself, with its 16th-century town hall and restored Palais Jean de Bourbon, now home of the local Museum of Art and Archaeology. Alternatively, take a break from all that cultural stuff and pay a visit to the handsome horses at the National Stud of Cluny (15 minutes).
