Overview of the site with views of the Clwydian Range (AONB) in the distance

General

  • Peaceful farm site with stunning views of the Clwydian Range
  • A 20-minute drive from Moel Famau; just under an hour from the coast
  • Well-equipped shared kitchen, plus firepits and chimineas to hire

Peaceful? Scenic? Very much so. This Denbighshire site is a place to settle down at for both, with added views out over the Clwydian Range Area of Natural Beauty.

The vibe is decidedly rural at Clwydian Wigwams and Campsite, a relaxed and spacious site 15 minutes’ drive from Ruthin – as you might expect from a site on a family-run working farm. Days can be easily filled with walks, mountain bike outings, watersports, fishing and other such outdoorsy antics, while evenings on site are a prime time to light up a barbecue or cuddle up by a firepit or chiminea (both available to hire on site) while aiming your gaze up at the starry skies (fingers crossed for cloudless nights…)

At times when it’s not barbecue weather (it’s Wales, it can happen…), retreat to the custom-built kitchen, which has been kitted out with an oven, hob, fridge, toaster and kettle, plus a dining table for indoor eats.

Also on site are plenty of open space for kids to run about and play games, plus a toilet block with three showers and a wash basin area.

We had a wonderfully friendly and helpful welcome from the owner Raymond which got our stay off to a lovely start. The pod itself was spotlessly clean and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. The campsite and facilities were also incredibly clean and it seemed the owners had thought of everything we might possibly need. The location is absolutely stunning, 360 degrees of spectacular scenery with not a car in sight! It really was an oasis of calm. We had a truly wonderful time and it was possibly one of the prettiest places we’ve ever been to.

I stayed here for 2 nights last week with my 6 year old son. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and completely at home. Our hosts were lovely and the campsite was in a stunning location. Our pod was clean and comfortable and after 2 days my son didn't want to go home. I would recommend the campsite to anyone and we will definitely be returning in the near future.

Immaculate clean camping site with excellent facilities. Customer service was second to none. Lovely couple Ray and Rose were excellent throughout. The kitchen had everything you needed and again was kept immaculately clean. The shower facilities are also excellent and again immaculately clean. The views are fantastic and there is a rope swing for the kids and lots of walks available. There is also a lovely little country pub nearby who serve lovely food.

Ray and Rose (the owners) are the loveliest people you could ever meet. The campsite is remote with beautiful views and good facilities. An impromptu booking on way to Snowdonia and did not disappoint. The children (10 and 13) explored the surrounding fields and loved it. Took the bikes to explorer the trails of Llandegla Forest 15 min drive away perfect for all abilities whether cycling or walking. Look forward to returning in the future...

My two grandchildren and I spent two nights at this camp and I would certainly return there. My grandchildren made great friends with the owners Grandson and loved spending the time we had there with him. The site is situated in a tranquil location amid beautiful surroundings of lush green fields, The amenities are excellent, and the site has a fully equipped kitchen, shower and toilet facilities that are spotless.

This charming place is complimented by the care and attention afforded to each and every family that were staying on the site. Ray, Rose and Gareth were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble to them, My Grandchildren loved their time there and want to return sometime in the future. My nine year old Granddaughter even commented on how nice it was to get back to nature, to walk through the fields surrounded by sheep and she surprisingly did not miss being tied to her mobile phone and technology, Young Oshan, Gareth's son strolled with us through the fields telling my grandchildren the names of the individual sheep, he was a great tour guide and the children loved spending time with him during our stay.
Toasting marshmallows on the fire pit that you can rent on site is a must for both the children and friends they made there. It was lovely watching them enjoying toasting the marshmallows chatting about the games and activities they had been engaged in, tag, football and giving each other funny names, you would never had guessed they had all only met each other a few hours earlier. Children of different age groups and from different parts of the UK all joined in together in play.
Thank you Rose, Ray, Gareth. and last but not least Oshan for making our stay so enjoyable,
    Lynda, Martha & Cerys

Local attractions

It’s a fair guess to assume you’ve come to this part of the world to get your fill of fresh air… so start your sojourn with a stroll in the Clwydian Range AONB, which surrounds the site, or set off for the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour away by car). Should you wish to scale Snowdon, it’ll take you an hour or so to drive to one of the starting points.

More excited by the mountain biking option? Make off to Moel Famau (20 minutes’ drive), the Llandegla Forest (half an hour) or Coed y Brenin Forest Park (an hour). Llyn Brenig (35 minutes) is a fab spot for fishing, and there’s wilder water to tackle with rafting and gorge walking trips from Llangollen (half an hour). Rather just view the waters? Take a scenic trip on the Bala Lake Railway (40 minutes).

If your Wales trip isn’t complete without a castle and a beach, those can be sorted with an outing to grand medieval pile Chirk Castle (40 minutes) and the sandy beach at Talacre (55 minutes). Llandudno, a bit further along the coast (an hour’s drive from the farm) is another fab spot for a beach day – ride the cable car up to the top of the Great Orme headland, then paddle in the sea or bimble around Bodnant Gardens, a couple of miles outside town.

Must see

  • Bodelwyddan Castle (16.6 miles)
