Overview of the site with views of the Clwydian Range (AONB) in the distance

General

  • Peaceful farm site with stunning views of the Clwydian Range
  • A 20-minute drive from Moel Famau; just under an hour from the coast
  • Well-equipped shared kitchen, plus firepits and chimineas to hire

Peaceful? Scenic? Very much so. This Denbighshire site is a place to settle down at for both, with added views out over the Clwydian Range Area of Natural Beauty.

The vibe is decidedly rural at Clwydian Wigwams and Campsite, a relaxed and spacious site 15 minutes’ drive from Ruthin – as you might expect from a site on a family-run working farm. Days can be easily filled with walks, mountain bike outings, watersports, fishing and other such outdoorsy antics, while evenings on site are a prime time to light up a barbecue or cuddle up by a firepit or chiminea (both available to hire on site) while aiming your gaze up at the starry skies (fingers crossed for cloudless nights…)

At times when it’s not barbecue weather (it’s Wales, it can happen…), retreat to the custom-built kitchen, which has been kitted out with an oven, hob, fridge, toaster and kettle, plus a dining table for indoor eats.

Also on site are plenty of open space for kids to run about and play games, plus a toilet block with three showers and a wash basin area.

Little attentions to detail is what matters the most and this little site is wonderful for a nice relaxing evening away. The kitchen is lovely and fully equipped and the showers are kept lovely and clean. We stayed valentines weekend and there was little chocolates laid out for us. The gentleman who runs the place met us on arrival and was so chatty and friendly we instantly felt welcomed.

Everything. No wifi which was an added bonus so totally relaxing away from town and city life and back to actually having conversations and enjoying eachothers company. Very comfy cozy pods with everything you need at your fingertips. At the night we were star gazing by the firepit. Bliss

We visted over Christmas, and would go back without a doubt and would recommend the site to anyone visiting North Wales. Beautiful location with stunning views, and cosy accomodation with comfortable beds. The facilites were great - the shared kitchen had every thing you could possibly need and everything was clean. The option to hire a fire pit was lovely, and perfect for celebrating the New Year! Raymond & Rose were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had some issues with our car over New Year and they went out of their way to help us get it sorted, even driving us to get parts to fix it and making sure we had everything we needed. They are such lovely hosts and it was so refreshing to visit a site like this; we will definitely be back!

The pod was set up with happy birthday banners, balloons and a happy birthday flag. Ray and Rose are lovely hosts, very welcoming, the fire pits are great and we also were given 2 freshly hunted pheasant.

The kitchen facilities are perfect for glamping, no need to take any camping cooking equipment if you don’t have any.

The showers are very clean and in a good condition.

It’s great if you don’t want to be bothered, no phone signal, it was perfect to disengage from the phone.

    Disliked:

The weather, Ray and Rose didn’t arrange warm weather and no rain, must try harder for the next visit. 😁

Local attractions

It’s a fair guess to assume you’ve come to this part of the world to get your fill of fresh air… so start your sojourn with a stroll in the Clwydian Range AONB, which surrounds the site, or set off for the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour away by car). Should you wish to scale Snowdon, it’ll take you an hour or so to drive to one of the starting points.

More excited by the mountain biking option? Make off to Moel Famau (20 minutes’ drive), the Llandegla Forest (half an hour) or Coed y Brenin Forest Park (an hour). Llyn Brenig (35 minutes) is a fab spot for fishing, and there’s wilder water to tackle with rafting and gorge walking trips from Llangollen (half an hour). Rather just view the waters? Take a scenic trip on the Bala Lake Railway (40 minutes).

If your Wales trip isn’t complete without a castle and a beach, those can be sorted with an outing to grand medieval pile Chirk Castle (40 minutes) and the sandy beach at Talacre (55 minutes). Llandudno, a bit further along the coast (an hour’s drive from the farm) is another fab spot for a beach day – ride the cable car up to the top of the Great Orme headland, then paddle in the sea or bimble around Bodnant Gardens, a couple of miles outside town.

Must see

  • Bodelwyddan Castle (26.8 kilometres)
