It’s the hometown of that hotel owner with a hair-trigger temper, but don’t let that put you off – Basil Fawlty doesn’t live there now, and anyway (whisper) he’s fictional. Just as well, as the sight of holidaymakers having fun might push Basil over the edge: Swanage is a well-known Dorset tourism draw, with miles of clean sandy beaches around it and the Isle of Purbeck, an award-winning pier (Pier of the Year for 2012!), and access to the World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast as well as Dorset’s castles, gardens, parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s even one of the UK’s most popular nudist beaches a few miles away at Studland – now we really can hear Basil roar in indignant rage…
