  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops
If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

Liked: This site was exceptionally well managed. The pitches were positioned liberally (we took an Campervan) and kept tidy. Walkways to the facilities were paved and well lit. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and importantly showers were hot, spacious, with plenty of room to place all your essentials out of the way so they don’t get wet. What I particularly liked about this site is that it sits alongside a railway with a station 5 minutes down the road, giving easy access to the seaside towns. You might think that this made the site noisy, but it was hardly noticeable from our pitch. All in all it was an absolute delight staying at Whitemead and I would absolutely come again. Thank you to all the staff who work so hard making it the perfect place to stay.

Liked: Very clean toilets and showers, nice small site, great pub nearby for food. Staff very friendly and helpful. Small shop with essential food items and equipment. Most of the area nice and flat for pitching.

Disliked: Playground very basic to keep small kids amused for long.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very well organised site, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Great location for us to go out without taking the camper - the train station and a bus stop were only a few minutes walk. We took the train to Poole and Weymouth

Disliked: The campsite was a bit rules based - no washing lines apart from rotary on a stand, toilets and showers closed for cleaning between 12-2. But that did mean everything was clean and tidy!

Liked: Wardens were fantastic! Against the heavy rain and wet soggy pitches, they helped us and everybody get where they needed, (and off..) Spotlessly clean, heated shower block and toilets. Great Little shop (though do not use). Waste bins emptied regularly. Security barriers. Wi-Fi.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike here.

Liked: Very clean site

Disliked: The shop on site is ridiculously expensive. There are signs in the showers, to clean them yourself after using!. When cone ting out water to the tap they made us disconnect statung that lots of others have to share, therefore we run out of water when showering, yseing water. Had to drag a massive barrel to keep filling up, this is not plumbed in then is it. They disconnected a piece to the tap to prevent us from using it. I would not stay here ever again ! 😒

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Guest, thank you for your review, Would like to point out from your feedback in regards to the tap situation, you where asked on several occasions to remove your hose due to the tap being shared between numerous pitches, as the pitches themselves are not fully serviced pitches. so on this occasion a member of staff did remove the connection part of the tap to stop connection. Also everyone on site uses aqua rolls to fill up water and your pitch itself was 10 foot away from the tap. In regards to the signs in the showers, this is not for cleaning up after yourself, this is to mop the floor after use for common courtesy for the next guest. Our shop is a convenient shop therefore pricing is a little higher than your average supermarket. kind regards Whitemead team

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
