  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops
If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked A lovely welcome from the warden. Very friendly & chatty, liked the way he helped us with water & explaining everything about the site... The site facilities were amazingly clean, plenty of hot water in the showers, loved the fact there was music playing in the back ground. Great location for getting out n about. Great view over the fields & river to watch the wildlife from our pitch. Loved hearing the trains go by.

Disliked The up & out at 10.30. The shop was shut when we wondered across at 4'ish on Saturday even though we were told on arrival that it was open till 6. Not much space between vehicles all seemed abit mismatched in placement of everything.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Debbie,

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and your pitch provided a great view over the adjoining fields, we are sorry you were not informed of the possible early close of our shop during quieter times, we will endeavor to give out clearer information during the season. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Kind regards,

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Great welcome from site staff who work hard to keep the site immaculate and who couldn't be more helpful! The showers and loos are spotless and the small shop well stocked. Main line station is a 10 minute stroll with an hourly service to Weymouth (or Bournemouth) likewise bus service to Lulworth. The Tank museum and Monkey World are close by. A short walk to the two village pubs.

Disliked Lights in the shower and toilet block go out after 10 mins so you need to be quick if it's dark! Grey water dumping from a motorhome is tricky but the super site staff are on hand to assist. No problem if you use a Wastehog though.

From the manager: Morning Robert,

Liked Nice big, level grass pitch, close to the play area for the kids.
Good, clean facilities on site.
Friendly, helpful staff.
Pub just over the road, serving good food.
Loads to do nearby. Lulworth cove, durdle door, fossil hunting, tank museum, etc.
Well connected with train station just a few mins walk away.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Much bigger site then you think when you enter as it’s split in two areas. Grass pitch with electricity a good size and near to the toilets and showers, which were exceptionally clean and modern looking.
Very warm welcome and lots of info regarding pub ( 10% off ) and near by train station. Staff were fantastic when my sun canopy and the wind fell out. They took it down and neatly folded it away , texted me and left a phone message. amazing service! If you like a site where you don’t move your van this site is perfect. Train to Weymouth or all stations to Bournemouth. Bus from Station to Lulworth Cove and Dirdle Dor.

Disliked Nothing.

Liked Immaculately maintained site and facilities with very friendly staff. The site is well managed, secure and the ideal base for exploring the Jurassic coast. Laundry facilities, a shop, no tokens for the hot showers and advice on hand. It is positioned near a railway line but it wasn't at all intrusive and no trains appeared to run at nighttime. The added advantage was a bridge over the railway to the Ship Inn, so good food and a decent pint are 1 minute away on foot.

Powered grass campsite

Liked I recently stayed at this site and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The facilities were excellent—everything was clean, well-maintained, and clearly looked after with care. The showers and toilets were spotless, and there were plenty of amenities available to make the stay comfortable and convenient.

What really made the visit stand out, though, was the staff. Everyone I encountered was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with anything I needed. Whether it was giving local recommendations or just checking in to make sure everything was okay, their positive attitude made a big difference.

Overall, this is a campsite I would highly recommend. Great facilities combined with such warm and helpful staff made for a really enjoyable stay, and I’d definitely return in the future.

Disliked Nothing the site was lovely

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
