  • Secluded and simple site on a farm in scenic rural surrounds
  • A mile's walk to Shaftesbury and a five-minute drive to Duncliffe Wood
  • A 35-minute drive from Stonehenge and 50 minutes from the coast
If a secluded stay is what you’re seeking for an upcoming hol, escape to Edwards Farm in dreamy Dorset and settle in at a site on a quiet field with oodles of space. Numbers are limited here to boost the peaceful vibes – and to make sure the whole experience feels as private as possible – plus barbecues are allowed as well. Wood is available on request for campfires, so you can also amp up the outdoorsy atmosphere by building a blaze too. If you’re after ingredients to assemble alfresco bites, set off on a short uphill walk to the centre of Shaftesbury (15 minutes) and scour the local shops (or just jump in the car for the five-minute journey). As for adventures, the park is at the base of the well-known Foyle Hill cycling route, with sublime scenery luring in bikers and hikers. With Duncliffe Woods (five minutes’ drive), Melbury Abbas (10 minutes), Hambledon Hills (15 minutes) and Hod Hill (20 minutes) all in close proximity, stunning strolls are in fact accessible in all directions. Back on base, amenities are of the basic variety and include a field shelter with dry toilets and cold-water taps. Edwards Farm is a prime pick for convenience as parking is permitted next to pitches and it’s a 20-minute drive from the Warminster exit off the A303. At the moment, the site asks that you take any rubbish away with you.

Bell tent (wood-burning stove)

Liked: We stayed for 3 nights in the 6 man Bell tent with a wood burner. It was great not having to worry about pitching and striking a tent. Lovely site, tucked away in a corner of Dorset with amazing views across the countryside. Facilities are basic but kept clean and tidy. Alex is a great host providing extra information before we areived to help us find the site and popping over during out stay to make sure everything was OK. We'd planned to use the site as a base to do other things, but ended up changing plans so we could spend more time there to enjoy the views and some stargazing. Lots to do in the surrounding area, spent an afternoon in Shaftesbury visiting the Abbey and Gold Hill, its a steep hill to get there but not very far and plenty of pubs and cafes to reward yourself when you get there. We didn't have children with us so havent provided a rating and there is no WiFi, but data signal was fine when I needed it.

From the manager: Thanks for the lovely review and for being so speedy with it! Very much appreciated. You managed to pick the weather perfectly, arrived just after a storm and left before one. I could do with you booking every week, as a guarantee for others. Hopefully see you again. Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I loved the location and the layout of the camp. I absolutely loved the outdoor showers, I had 3 showers during our 2 night stay!! So perfect. The washing up area was nice and clean and I loved all the little touches, like the welcome leaflet, the firepit wall, the jars and tealights. The communication with Alex prior to arrival was amazing & so, so helpful. Thank you! Also the town if Shaftesbury is a 20 min walk and such a gorgeous town. Can't wait to stay again!

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Thanks so much for the review, and great artwork! I am getting a good collection from the season, as someone who can't even draw a stickman properly, I am always amazed at drawing and painting. Really glad you had a good time. Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We had a wonderfull stay at Edwards Farm! It is small with beautifull view and you find there everything you need, simple and clean. The shower runs on sunlight so you might need to take a cold shower....;). Alex is a wonderfull host, very helpfull, friendly, fulltime of story's and a perfect guide to help you find the most beautiful sides and pubs and restaurants.

Disliked: Cannot think of anything...

From the manager: Thank you for the review. It was great to meet you both, and your lovely dogs. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip to the UK. Obviously Dorset is the best County, but I might be biased! Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic place for a family camping trip! Plenty of space on the pitch and surrounding. Great facilties - clean toilets, even hot water from the solar heating to save time washing up. Beautiful walks and parks nearby. Stunning night sky 4G accessible from the bench at the top of the field for any last mintue downloads, whole enjoying the view :) Friendly, helpful owners too. Thank you

From the manager: It is a bit of a nook in the countryside, I like that. Thanks for pointing out that there is 4G around but that sometimes you need to find it. Some people love being off grid, others can not live with out it. But having choice is great. Thanks so much for the positive comments and great review. Best Alex

Bell tent (three person)

Liked: Great location, site really well looked after and great comms from the owner. Quiet place, with lovely views and a nice walk to Shaftesbury for shops, cafes etc. (though uphill on the way there!). Bell tent was lovely, spacious and clean and tidy. At the entrance to the site there are 2 sinks, one for washing up etc. in the small wooden building and 3 clean and stocked portaloos nearby. The solar showers are a nice touch too. There aren’t any houses etc. close to the field, so it’s quiet (and dark!) at night and you might see some bats. I took my 2 boys (7 & 10) while the site was quiet, we walked to town one day, up to the bench in the adjacent field for the view and bought logs and cooked burgers on the fire pit. Not sure there was much else we could do there, plenty of room for frisbee and a football but good as a base for local and other attractions and we spent a day at the beach (Sandbanks) which was about 50 minutes away. All in all a really nice site (our thanks to Alex) and we’ll be back!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks, this is a great review and will help others. We aim for a quiet campsite but this year has seen far fewer visitors than the last two. Probably down to the weather, and economics. Shame there were not more children on site that weekend. I am looking forward to seeing a few more campers in the next few weeks, which always gives a bit more atmosphere. Interesting you mention the dark - I only just found out that the Cranborne Chase (just up the road) is renowned for its dark skies and Stargazing. People come from miles to watch the constellations and meteor showers. Long may we avoid light pollution! Best Alex

No. 7 bell tent (wood-burning stove, six person)

Liked: We stayed as a friends/family, 3 young children (6, 6 & 5) and a 3 month old puppy and it was perfect. We stayed in number 7 and had the decking which was perfect to sit on in the evening (even in the rain) and became a natural foot bath before entering the yurt because of the crappy weather we experienced during our stay. Alex is very friendly, we only stayed for 3 nights but I’m pretty confident we saw him at least 3 times. He just pops over to say hi and to ask how everything is going. We stayed during a storm and Alex came round morning and night to let us know the forecast and to make sure all was okay. Nothing was too much. We had an amazing stay, there is a lot to do around Edwards Farm, we stayed 3 nights but next time I think we’ll be there for the week.

Disliked: It’s a little difficult to find if you only have one pair of adult eyes to look. Phone service is hit and miss so it makes sorting sat navs/google maps out a little challenging. But it’s nice to have to break from electronics also.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the great review and photos. You are such a positive person, an example to all of us. Despite a miserable few days of weather, you completely made the best of your stay. Not only that but when I expected a soggy tent to clear up, I found an immaculate clean and tidy one instead. I know I have thanked you already, but please accept a formal public thank you on pitch up! Welcome back any time. Best Alex

Local attractions

A visit to Shaftesbury is sure to be on the cards when staying at this site – the historic town is a mere mile away, so you can easily go off on a wander around the shops or get up to Gold Hill in the centre for views across the vale. If stretching the legs isn’t really for you, admire animals instead at Longleat House (half an hour’s drive) and Monkey World (40 minutes). Those more culturally curious can navigate their way towards National Trust attractions like Stourhead (20 minutes), King Alfred's Tower (half an hour) and Montacute House (45 minutes) or skedaddle to the ancient site of Stonehenge (35 minutes) to gaze at the granddaddy of all things historical. Keen for the coast? Peruse the seaside around Poole (50 minutes) and Bournemouth (an hour), perhaps heading off on an amble between the two; urban explores are to be had around Bath’s Roman ruins (55 minutes), at Salisbury’s high-spired cathedral (50 minutes) or closer by at the abbey in the pretty settlement of Sherborne (half an hour).
