Duncliffe woods a mile's walk away – climb to the top and find the trig point

  • Secluded and simple site on a farm in scenic rural surrounds
  • A mile's walk to Shaftesbury and a five-minute drive to Duncliffe Wood
  • A 35-minute drive from Stonehenge and 50 minutes from the coast
If a secluded stay is what you’re seeking for an upcoming hol, escape to Edwards Farm in dreamy Dorset and settle in at a site on a quiet field with oodles of space. Numbers are limited here to boost the peaceful vibes – and to make sure the whole experience feels as private as possible – plus barbecues are allowed as well. Wood is available on request for campfires, so you can also amp up the outdoorsy atmosphere by building a blaze too. If you’re after ingredients to assemble alfresco bites, set off on a short uphill walk to the centre of Shaftesbury (15 minutes) and scour the local shops (or just jump in the car for the five-minute journey). As for adventures, the park is at the base of the well-known Foyle Hill cycling route, with sublime scenery luring in bikers and hikers. With Duncliffe Woods (five minutes’ drive), Melbury Abbas (10 minutes), Hambledon Hills (15 minutes) and Hod Hill (20 minutes) all in close proximity, stunning strolls are in fact accessible in all directions. Back on base, amenities are of the basic variety and include a field shelter with dry toilets and cold-water taps. Edwards Farm is a prime pick for convenience as parking is permitted next to pitches and it’s a 20-minute drive from the Warminster exit off the A303. At the moment, the site asks that you take any rubbish away with you.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Location. Lovely clean toilet. Pitches spacious . Owner very welcoming. Will definitely be back next year

Disliked: We as regular campers all over country just found compared to other sites logs were expensive for the amount given

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the great review. Really helps. Point taken about the logs, I hope I didn't short change you. We always include fire lighters and kindling with the logs, and they are always seasoned and dry ash, but I may not have been as generous as normal. Better helping when you return! Best Alex

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Beautiful, quiet spot. Being late in the season, I had the place to myself so it felt like nearly-wild camping with the benefit of a shelter for dining.

Bell tent (wood-burning stove)

Liked: Everything. We had the best time. Clean toilet facilities, solar powered showers, running water for washing dishes/brushing teeth (inside a really cool looking wooden hut!). This also housed some helpful brochures so that you could see what is around the area etc. There were fresh planted herbs out the front too which added a beautiful touch! Firepits supplied for free and logs for a small fee of £5. Beautiful scenery around the site.
We were lucky enough to get a chance to be able to stay in the 6 person, wood burner stove tent. Amazing. Really beautifully set out bell tent room with some nice added touches. Amazing view. We were all so sad to leave! Alex was very helpful, friendly, welcoming and informative. Sent over lots of information before our arrival. Alex was away on our arrival so unfortunately we didn't get to meet him. But he had a helping hand, who was also very welcoming, friendly and available to help with anything we may have needed. Absolutely loved it. Peaceful. Would definitely go again.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Loved the field, small and cozy! Limited pitches, which is what we look for as we prefer quieter campsites.
Toilets are clean and easily accessed, separate sink for teeth brushing etc and separate washing up facilities. Great showers. It wasn't that sunny whilst we were there, so no hot water, but we didn't mind :)

We flew kites (bought from a nearby shop), walked and played. Perfect weekend!

Alex (the owner) is very friendly and super relaxed. Happy with most things, as long as everyone respects the rules he has in place (which are simple and mostly common sense).

We really enjoyed our stay 🤩 thank you!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Abbey, much appreciated. Apologies for the showers, its a new system but definitely needs tweaking. I am told it should produce warm water on a dull day, definitely not happening! Love to see you and family back again, glad you enjoyed your stay. Best Alex

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Good place

Disliked: It's hard to find. It's a very small and invisible sign.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Valentina, thanks for taking the time to review, I am sorry you find it hard to find. We deliberately keep the signage low key, as unfortunately people will stop and use the toilets, and other facilities. This is why I give the post code and what3words address in the information when you book, which will literally take you to the gate. I see you rated the accommodation, which was your tent, as 8/10, and I think you said you had just bought a new one, so I am sorry this did not work out for you, but there is not a lot I can do about that. Also we do not advertise WiFi onsite. 4G is all that you will get but sometimes that is not reliable, but again not really my problem. Best Alex

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We loved the mix of well kept and flat pitches with wild flowers left to grow between. A lovely wild flower meadow in the neighbouring field to walk through with a great spot to watch the sun set over the hills. Edwards Farm has all the basic essentials we needed for 2 friends camping together. Thank you again, we'll be back!

Disliked: I would honestly struggle to find anything to dislike.

If you are of the same mindset as that of the reviewer below who decided to rate this site's accomodation down because of the tent that they themselves brought then perhaps this isn't the site for you :)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to review, and you really understand the type of site we try to offer, much appreciated. Look forward to seeing you again. Best Alex

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: scenery was lovely, lots of wild flowers between the pitches. campsite owner checked in very briefly to make sure everything was okay and that I was settled in. Plenty of resources available detailing local walks and activities.

Disliked: The ground was a little wet, but I visited very early in the season, I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue later on.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, I am sorry you could only rate the campsite 8/10, you have spoilt my two and a half year record of 10/10 of which I was so proud! But I guess it had to happen sometime. I respect your review as you have to review as you see it. But could I just answer a few of your comments: I hope this is the right person, but I think you booked last minute, arriving that afternoon mid week. This booking popped up on my phone, but unfortunately I was in hospital, having been admitted urgently over the weekend, all a bit of a shock as I am normally super fit. I phoned you immediately and mentioned that the site would not be prepared as usual and if you wanted to book elsewhere or have a refund I was perfectly happy to do so. You did not want either. So I arranged for a friend to pop down and make sure you were ok, sadly that was the best I could do in the circumstances. The site was wet because we have had the worst winter and wettest spring on record, I am sorry I really can not help that. Thank goodness it is so much better now. I had delayed a month from usual opening because of this. We do not offer wifi at the site, as we are entirely off grid, so we encourage people not to rate the wifi. Lastly, I see you rated your accommodation as 8/10 as well. As you brought your own tent , I would strongly urge a trip to the camping shop to treat yourself to an upgrade, get that tent you have always dreamed about! Sorry to have missed you. All Best Alex

Local attractions

A visit to Shaftesbury is sure to be on the cards when staying at this site – the historic town is a mere mile away, so you can easily go off on a wander around the shops or get up to Gold Hill in the centre for views across the vale. If stretching the legs isn’t really for you, admire animals instead at Longleat House (half an hour’s drive) and Monkey World (40 minutes). Those more culturally curious can navigate their way towards National Trust attractions like Stourhead (20 minutes), King Alfred's Tower (half an hour) and Montacute House (45 minutes) or skedaddle to the ancient site of Stonehenge (35 minutes) to gaze at the granddaddy of all things historical. Keen for the coast? Peruse the seaside around Poole (50 minutes) and Bournemouth (an hour), perhaps heading off on an amble between the two; urban explores are to be had around Bath’s Roman ruins (55 minutes), at Salisbury’s high-spired cathedral (50 minutes) or closer by at the abbey in the pretty settlement of Sherborne (half an hour).
