  • Peaceful wild camping in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A 30-minute drive from Weymouth; 15 minutes from the Cerne Abbas Giant
  • Back-to-basic pitches with spectacular views, close to a pub and shop
Wild camping is all about being off grid, and New Court Farm Camping certainly is that – here's a place that's suitably simple in style, and where you can choose your own pitch (get there early to grab the best views) on a four-acre field near Dorchester within the Dorset AONB. This camping field being on a working livestock farm, you’ll soon be firm friends with the calves and sheep in neighbouring meadows. Dogs are allowed on site but please keep them under close control because of the animals. Facilities here are pretty basic, with unisex portable toilets and running water from a stand tap, as well as a simple, wooden shower shack. The rewards for this simplicity are many though, including spectacular views of woodlands, a patchwork of fields and the hills that surround you. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, with the nearest essentials shop a 10-minute drive away. Using this as a base, you can potter around winding Dorset lanes to historic towns like Dorchester – where there’s a gourmet market (Wednesday and Sunday mornings) for picking up goodies for the barbecue. If you’re not planning on cooking at all – it’s your holiday, remember? – there are several pubs serving decent food within a 15-minute drive.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Everything! Really nice and helpful hosts. Great views all around and quiet too. Being able to have multiple tents per pitch was great as it meant the children (teenagers) could each have their own tent. Will definitely stay again. Toilets and shower checked and cleaned daily. Being as they haven't been doing this long they are doing a great job!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: From the moment you arrive, a sense of peace and calm descends. This is a site where space and freedom are prioritised, a place for families to make memories in a simple, natural way. You are wrapped in the security of a site surrounded immediately by mature trees and their inhabitants, set amongst rolling Dorset hills where nature enables a mindful experience. There is much to like and more to love. * Space, beauty, peace * Attentive and super friendly hosts * Recapture a simple way of living * Cleanliness and presentation * Excellent 4G signal, if required * Optional extras * Great information station

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike, this is a little haven.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful friendly hosts. Helpful, approachable. Clean portaloo and shower. Spacious field with lots of space between tents. So much to like.

Disliked: Possibly the lack of ‘real’ toilets. An additional shower perhaps, or a shelf in the shower room. But really not much to dislike.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Arrived, and chose our own pitch we had multiple tents, clean facilities and lovely couple who run this campsite, who let the children feed there farm animals in the morning. Came many times to clean toilet and shower facilities. We’re very friendly kind and helpful.

Disliked: No complaints to this campsite.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: We love this tent only farm, so nice not to have large motorhomes around with satellite TV etc and just the simplicity of camping in a tent with no electrics. A small site but beautifully run by a friendly local farming family.

Disliked: The noises of the the cows, birds of prey, sheep can be interrupted during the day by the Kart track at Clay Pigeon but then we went karting which was awesome!

Local attractions

For anyone with even a slight interest in history, the Cerne Giant (15 minutes' drive) is an ancient and extraordinary spectacle, carved into a hill above pretty Cerne Abbas village. There’s also a 19th-century chalk horse inscribed into the hillside at Osmington (40 minutes), and a massive Iron Age hill fort at Maiden Castle (half an hour). For more outdoor adventures, the Wessex Ridgeway is only a five-minute drive away, making this a smashing overnight stop for long-distance walkers. Families can also blow cobwebs away with a walk along the shingle at Chesil Beach (35 minutes) or get the kids hunting for fossils at Charmouth (45 minutes) on the spectacular Jurassic Coast. Weymouth (30 minutes) makes a fab day out for families, with plenty of seafront eateries, a swathe of sandy beach and close encounters of the fishy kind at Sea Life Centre Weymouth on hand if the weather should turn against you. Another idea for a family trip is Abbotsbury Swannery (35 minutes), a sanctuary for mute swans – it's also got a maze where you can lose the kids for a little while.
