  • Peaceful wild camping in the Dorset National Landscape
  • A 30-minute drive from Weymouth; 15 minutes from the Cerne Abbas Giant
  • Back-to-basic pitches with spectacular views, close to a pub and shop
Wild camping is all about being off grid, and New Court Farm Camping certainly is that – here's a place that's suitably simple in style, and where you can choose your own pitch (get there early to grab the best views) on a four-acre field near Dorchester within the Dorset National Landscape. This camping field being on a working livestock farm, you’ll soon be firm friends with the calves and sheep in neighbouring meadows. Dogs are allowed on site but please keep them under close control because of the animals. Facilities here are pretty basic, with unisex portable toilets and running water from a stand tap, as well as a simple, wooden shower shack. The rewards for this simplicity are many though, including spectacular views of woodlands, a patchwork of fields and the hills that surround you. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, with the nearest essentials shop a 10-minute drive away. Using this as a base, you can potter around winding Dorset lanes to historic towns like Dorchester – where there’s a gourmet market (Wednesday and Sunday mornings) for picking up goodies for the barbecue. If you’re not planning on cooking at all – it’s your holiday, remember? – there are several pubs serving decent food within a 15-minute drive.

What customers say

New Court Farm Camping offers a tranquil, secluded getaway with stunning rural scenery and dark skies. Visitors rave about the welcoming hosts, excellent farm-fresh goods, and the stripped-back "wild camping" feel. Facilities are simple but tidy, featuring a well-liked hot shower. While some note its remoteness, others appreciate the quiet and connection to nature. One guest suggested an accessible porta-potty.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Lovely, quiet back to basics site, perfect for what we needed while visiting friends. Lovely to see the calves in the field behind us which were very friendly.
The portaloo was very clean and the shower was lovely maybe a little too hot but once we worked it out was fine.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked So SIMPLE! (The field & the utilities.)
So FRIENDLY! (Simon the farmer.)
So BEAUTIFUL! (The location & dark skies.)
So EASY! (Booking through Pitch-Up.)
So QUIET! (Rather liked the absence of people.)
So REFRESHING! ('Outdoor' shower, sunlit with views.)

Disliked Not so much a dislike as a REQUEST...
I camped with my youngest daughter Rose who is 15 with additional needs. Were we to return, I would really value an accessible Portaloo, that is typically square and a little larger. Squeezing into a 'normal' plastic loo as adult & teenager is really tricky, elbows everywhere!
I noticed that parents with toddlers also need to be in the current Portaloo at the same time as their child, so they would benefit from more space also.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked We had a great stay at this campsite. Good location. The facilities were clean, and the hot shower was especially welcome. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We also appreciated the option to hire a fire pit, which was reasonably priced.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked New Court Farm Camping is beautifully located in very quiet Dorset countryside. We loved the peace, the space and the opportunity to watch and listen to nature, especially the night skies and the house martins preparing to migrate. The site is very well maintained, brings much needed simplicity in a busy world yet has all you need and more if required.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Quiet and secluded. Super kind owners who sorted issues really quickly and made sure everything was immaculate. Wonderful sausages from the farm. Hot shower. Great walks straight from the campsite. Will take VW camper but nothing bigger and no electric.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Love the peace and quiet. The surrounding countryside is spectacular. The facilities are simple but this is reflected in the great value. The most important thing for me is the basic but decent shower.

Local attractions

For anyone with even a slight interest in history, the Cerne Giant (15 minutes' drive) is an ancient and extraordinary spectacle, carved into a hill above pretty Cerne Abbas village. There’s also a 19th-century chalk horse inscribed into the hillside at Osmington (40 minutes), and a massive Iron Age hill fort at Maiden Castle (half an hour). For more outdoor adventures, the Wessex Ridgeway is only a five-minute drive away, making this a smashing overnight stop for long-distance walkers. Families can also blow cobwebs away with a walk along the shingle at Chesil Beach (35 minutes) or get the kids hunting for fossils at Charmouth (45 minutes) on the spectacular Jurassic Coast. Weymouth (30 minutes) makes a fab day out for families, with plenty of seafront eateries, a swathe of sandy beach and close encounters of the fishy kind at Sea Life Centre Weymouth on hand if the weather should turn against you. Another idea for a family trip is Abbotsbury Swannery (35 minutes), a sanctuary for mute swans – it's also got a maze where you can lose the kids for a little while.
