Hillcrest Views Campsite: Valley views

General

  • Quiet back-to-basics site on a working farm in Illogan
  • Golf course, trampoline park and watersports lake within 20 minutes
  • 10 minutes' walk from village pubs and 45 from Portreath beach

A working farm on the edge of a Cornwall village, with easy access to country footpaths and a 45-minute saunter from the beach… the kind of place one could settle in for a lifetime, eh?

The folks at Hillcrest Views Campsite certainly think so – the family set up home here over 80 years ago and haven’t budged since. Current owner Amy’s now welcoming guests to share in her tribe’s special spot while making sure it doesn’t lose its peaceful vibe – thus the small site has pleasingly spacious pitches but only basic amenities. Flick through the pics and you’ll note some gorgeous rural views: a fab backdrop for stoking up a barbecue while the kids race about playing games.

Admire those views for a bit and you’ll probably think you’re in the middle of nowhere, so it’s pleasing to remember that you’re a mere 10-minute amble from Illogan village and its pub, shops and chippy (plus a pasty shop, of course – a staple in these parts). If you’re doing DIY dins, supermarket supplies for your meals can be picked up in Redruth, 10 minutes’ drive away.

You could spend many a day wandering on local trails and beaches, but if you’ve brought the small sorts it’s handy to know that you’re less than 15 minutes’ drive from all sorts of family attractions, including a castle, a trampoline park and a watersports centre. It’s also just a mile or so to the A30 for those looking to head to more far-flung attractions like St Ives or the Eden Project.

Nicely spacious campsite. Manager and staff very helpful and friendly. Its basic but that's what I like. Lots of facilities nearby and beach just 10 mins away by car. Don't play bingo in local pub as only the locals seem to win lol

Thank you for your review and custom Amanda. Great to hear you enjoyed your stay except for the biaised bingo! It was a pleasure having you both on site and we wish you all the best for the rest of your summer.

Well managed and tidy site. Tucked away and quiet with lovely views. Warm welcome from Amy who explained everything about the site. Spacious pitches with little hedges just planted in between which will look even better in future years. So nice for a site not to just cram as many people as possible in but put thought into making it an enjoyable environment.
Nice clean toilet facilities and large shower cubicles and nice warm showers.
Basic site but perfect if you want a quiet pleasant camping experience and don't need all the bells and whistles of bigger sites like WiFi/fridges/shop etc.
Local shop and pub nearby and short drive to larger supermarkets.
Hope to return again next summer!

    Disliked:

    Nothing really!
Can imagine it might get windy as it's quite exposed but we had perfect weather!

From the manager...

Thank you Lindsay for such a lovely and thorough review! We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and what we are trying to achieve. We are still continuing to build the campsite around what you, as the customers like best so it's thanks to all the great feedback that we have shaped the site as we have. We really appreciated your custom and would love to see you back again next year!
Best wishes,

Great location, lovely scenery. Spacious and clean showers, toilets. Everything clearly sign posted such as drinking water / recycling. Host was lovely and welcoming. Pub and shop in 10 minute walk, and a great Indian takeaway that delivered to the campsite!

Pitch was uneven but that’s nature!

From the manager...

Thank you for your great review and feedback Zoe. We are pleased you enjoyed the site and village amenities closeby.
We have plans to level all our remaining meadow pitches this winter coming, that we were not able to complete this winter gone. We will then reset the entire grassland with a new grounds maintenance plan for next season to help keep our pitches in the best shape possible! Exciting times ahead. Thank you very much for your custom and we wish you all the best for the rest of your summer.

    Good sized pitches.
Toilet/Shower blocks were immaculate. Easy access to water and waste.
Views fabulous. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets from this vantage point, plus a nice breeze.
    Hosts very ameanable and friendly.
Great location for visiting beaches etc.
Village shops and pub very short walk.
    Level pitches.
On a partial working farm and livery but no noise at all.
If you like peace and quiet and views of fields horses and cows then this is a great site.
Plenty of walks for dogs and very dog friendly site. All dogs on leads at all times which we prefer.
    Really well kept site.

    Disliked:

Security light on all night in top field.
Explained this to the owner whom said no-one had complained in 4 years.

But everyone we spoke to who was camping in this field had the same issue. (too polite to complain).

I'm sure they will address this with an infra-red camera at some point.

Gate open all day and night in top field. Arrivals all turning up into top field. If gate was closed with appropriate signage then this would stop confusion and make the top field more relaxing and secure.

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your thorough review and feedback, this is much appreciated. We are pleased enjoyed your stay and exploring our local area.
I'm pleased the light has now been mentioned so we can address this appropriately as we ourselves have slept under this light in a bell tent and did not have any problems but we are used to night-lights, etc with young children.
We are in the process of replacing our broken meadow signage so this should help address confusion for campers when being directed into either our paddock or meadow.
Once again thank you for your feedback and your custom and we wish you all the best for the rest of your summer.

Thank you for your great review Hazel. We are so lucky to be located where we are and really pleased you enjoyed our site as a base. Coming from Redruth, enter Illogan coming up a large hill. At the brow of the hill you will see two chapels opposite one another. Take it slowly here, as the site is 50 yards further on, on the right-hand side opposite a little crossroad sign for Richards Lane. Look out for a concrete lane with central grass verge between two white cottages; this leads up to the site.
