  • Quiet, dog-friendly site at Totland on the Isle of Wight
  • A 15-minute drive from Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay beach five minutes
  • Dog park, washing machines and shower block with underfloor heating
With private showers, changing areas with hair dryers, and accessible washrooms in the luxury facilities block with underfloor heating, Stoats Farm Caravan and Camping is a place whose fine facilities easily match its fine views. Found in Totland at the most westerly point of the Isle of Wight, the site’s in spectacular countryside looking over chalk downs to the sea. Your kids can let off steam running around on the camping field, and there’s even an exercise area for dogs. For outdoorsy families, there are plenty of bracing walks across the downs, taking you to the landmark Needles or to swimming spots at Freshwater Bay. Ask at reception for details of days out: you could try your hand at sailing lessons in Yarmouth or catch some surfing waves at Compton Bay, both less than 15 minutes away by car. For a change of pace, there’s plenty to see and do (think Queen Victoria’s palace and Tennyson’s Monument) on a drive around the island. Charcoal barbecues are allowed here (just make sure you've read the guidelines in advance), and there's a shop on site where you can pick up essentials supplied by local businesses, plus any items you may have forgotten. If you’re on holiday from cooking too, try the seafood dishes at the pub five minutes from the site. To complete the picture, a round up of the camp’s facilities includes on-pitch parking, and you can use the washing machines and tumble dryers for a small charge.

Local attractions

Stoats Farm is starting point for scenic strolls along the Isle of Wight’s coastal paths, or you can follow the Tennyson Trail, a 15-mile walk from Carisbrooke Castle (25 minutes' drive) to The Needles. If the kids have behaved, treat them to the stomach-churning chairlift ride over the sea at The Needles Landmark Attraction. If they’ve still got energy to spare, let them run riot on the beach at Freshwater Bay (five minutes), and if that doesn’t do the trick, wear them out on the rides and go-karts at Tapnell Farm Park (10 minutes). Change the pace with a tour of Osborne House (40 minutes), built for Queen Victoria in 1845, or learn about Alfred, Lord Tennyson at Farringford (10 minutes) house and gardens. And don’t forget the Isle of Wight is small: you can rootle around indie boutiques in Yarmouth (15 minutes) or Ryde (40 minutes) and still have oodles of time to pop into the arcades on Shanklin Beach’s prom (also 40 minutes).
