  • Dog-friendly site 10 minutes' walk away from Mawbray Banks, Cumbria
  • Lake District National Park a half-hour drive; Carlisle 45 minutes
  • Toilet block and showers; a five-minute drive from Allonby beach
Fancy a little feel-good getaway? The Lowther Arms sits within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. Guests have access to a toilet block and showers.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: We received a very warm welcome from all the staff in the pub as well as the local farmer who came to pull us out with his tractor when we got stuck! The campsite is small and all grass which was too soft for our van. The landlord was happy for us to park on the car park and we still had access to the electric hook up. We had an evening meal in the pub which was stunning and comes highly recommended. Our overnight stay in the car park was peaceful despite Storm Kathleen doing its best to disturb us. The landlord gave us mobile phone numbers to contact them if we needed anything during the night. This is a stunning site that we will definitely be returning to.

Disliked: Nothing

Camping pod

Liked: The pod was brilliant. We loved the under floor heating especially as we visited during Storm Cathleen. Even during strong winds the pod was a peaceful sleep. The kids loved the bunk beds and the close proximity to play park. Pub was great, lovely food and atmosphere.

Disliked: Pod could use curtains by beds as was woken early but with 2 children we were up anyway so not a big deal for us.

Camping pod

Liked: The pod was great with under floor heating, king size bed and bunk beds. Kettle, cups and a fridge. Comfortable beds. Pub on site - owners very helpful and pleasant. Food good and reasonably priced. But disappointed that no quiz or anything on Friday or Saturday evening, but not a game changer. Site is small and well kept. Only 1 shower with toilet and another separate toilet, both kept immaculately clean. 5 miles to silloth in the car and beach 5 minutes walk away. Play park just outside site and plenty water taps and electric hook up available if camping. All in all very pleasant Easter weekend. Site wasn’t full, only 3 caravans and us in the field secured by a gate.

Disliked: Pod needs curtains or blinds as early morning light means waking early. Other 3 caravans all had dogs which weren’t on leads so they kept wandering over to where we were. Luckily our dog wasn’t phased though.

Camping pod

Liked: Everything. Pod was lovely and clean, heating was fab. Had the site to ourselves so was bliss. Amenities lovely and clean. Landlords of the pub were absolutely fantastic very nice and friendly. Shout out to the amazing pub bathrooms. My son said the fanciest he'd ever been in. However he was upset that the girls had a chandelier and the boys didn't. Food was amazing. All I can say is get yourself there you won't regret it.

Disliked: Couldn't stay longer!

Camping pod

Liked: Second time booking, location was ideal for us, walks from the door and next to a lovely pub serving good food and beer as well as putting on entertainment. Spacious basic accommodation with a fridge and kettle. Under floor heating was ideal. The pod is a stones throw from a pub and centre of the village. Beach 10 minutes walk.

Disliked: Still only 1 toilet and shower combined for the site. Shame the pod doesn't have its own bathroom facilities. Wasn't a problem start of March, but can see it being an issue prime times. We had previously visited last June and it was busy back then, waiting for the loo.

From the manager: Hi Sharon, Thanks for your review. We really appreciate the feedback. We do have the shower block and an additional toilet now which we added when we took over the pub. This is right next to the shower block. Regarding the camping POD having its own facilities, this is something that is just not possible as it is simply a camping POD with space for 4 beds and fridge/kettle etc. however I do appreciate your comments. We do only ever have 4 people/pitches used at any one time and do try to book in people that do have their own facilities in their vans to take the pressure off the shower block. We are always trying to work on new ways to make the pub and camping better so all feedback is genuinely received as constructive. We hope to see you again.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: This a our 1st motorhomes & our 1st outing. On arrival we were greated by the landlord. As we weren't confident driving onto the field as we have had lots of rain. We were advised we could park on the car park, but could still plug into the electric. There was a shower & toilet, which we didn't need to use. We had a lovely meal un the pub.

Camping pod

Liked: Super clean camping pod with plenty of space and comfy beds. It has a fridge, kettle and outdoor log burner which was a nice extra. Lovely friendly staff. We usually camp in our tent but due to being pregnant I didn't want the fuss of having to put the tent up so to be able to go somewhere like this was a nice change. It also has a lovely well maintained park just a cross the road which was great for the kids.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Brilliant location. Near the beach for lovely winter walks. It’s also only 30 mins from the lakes so excellent for exploring but far enough away from the crowds. The pub is just great, fab staff and food with a very welcoming atmosphere. Great food too.

Local attractions

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, why not make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour)? In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
