Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings – and take note again, the pub is closed on Monday and Tuesdays), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast National Landscape, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day, you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

Kleine, rustige camping met vriendelijk personeel, schone faciliteiten en heerlijk pubvoedsel. Gasten waarderen goed onderhouden plekken en de rustige ligging. Enige minpunt is het beperkte aantal douches/toiletten tijdens drukke periodes. Veel terugkerende gasten zien dit als een verborgen parel.

Ik was blij met Lovely site, quiet, clean and very well kept.
I cant fault the staff, in particular the lady who checked us in. She was super friendly and really helpful.

Ik was niet blij met Unfortunately having only one shower and two toilets was disappointing. If the site had of been busier I think it would've been a real struggle.

Ik was niet blij met This is the perfect campsite if you want a grumpy owner, cut grass that hasn’t been picked up, dog mess on the ground, awful toilets, a sink to wash dishes in that is in the same block as the only shower and the second toilet, rocks in the ground that make it practically impossible to pitch a tent and a shower which runs hot and cold.
We didn’t try the food but I overheard another camper saying it wasn’t pleasant.
A quick note to the owner, don’t bother having WiFi if it’s not going to work, and don’t walk over to your customers in a mood, trying to prove that the WiFi works, pretending no one else has had a problem and then go and ask the other campers if they’re getting the WiFi.
Do yourself a favour and find somewhere nicer to camp, you’ll regret going to this one.

Ik was blij met Lovely little site pitches very spaced was a bit difficult to get pegs into ground it was quite stoned under the grass but we managed lovely staff very helpful our car broke down and had no way or getting it started luckily thy had a battery jumper we could lend very understanding encase we couldn't get moved of site at dedicated leaving time, shower was great always very clean extra toilet available (also very clean) if primary toilet was in use.

Ik was blij met What a fantastic place we camped for 2 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. On the first night we went for a drink in the pub. The staff are very welcoming and polite the locals made us feel very welcome. The facilities are clean, the park is great for the kids. We wanted a nice quiet site to get some peace and that is what we got, can't wait to book again.

Ik was blij met Small, quiet site next to a pub. Plenty of space even when at its busiest. Friendly welcome from the pub team who were helpful in sharing things to do locally. 10mins walk to the beach.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour). In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
