Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings – and take note again, the pub is closed on Monday and Tuesdays), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast National Landscape, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day, you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

En liten, lugn och välskött camping med utmärkta faciliteter och service. Personalen är vänlig, puben serverar god mat och lokalerna är rena. Perfekt läge vid stranden och nära promenadstråk. Vissa mindre problem med Wi-Fi och duschar, men överlag mycket positiv feedback och många vill återvända.

Tyckte om Everything! Small site, only 1 other pitch occupied, single shower unit with toilet and a proper electric shower so not having to keep hitting the push button to turn it on, plus separate toilet, short walk down to the beach, play park right outside for those with children as well as a small area with football goals, the campsite was simply perfect.
However, the star of the show was easily the pub. The staff were unbelievably welcoming and friendly, a standard of customer service I have not experienced in a long time, not just nice, above and beyond wonderful, they clearly love their jobs and their passion shines through. And the food, OH MY LIFE, whatever you order, make sure it comes with chips because they were the best chips I’ve ever tasted!! Myself, teenage son and his friend all had fish and chips, and the portions are so generous, it defeated us all.

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, we’ll certainly be back!

Tyckte om Lovely small campsite. The pub onsite is excellent and the food was delicious! Staff were super friendly and accommodating.

We stayed in the pod and it was perfect. Good size and the beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in on a campsite! Fridge with tea/coffee and milk was a lovely touch and made things easier!

Modern shower/toilet rooms. Park and football pitch across the road was ideal for the children. Lovely location, some lovely beaches and walks nearby.

Tyckte inte om With the shower room being not separated from the toilet/sink meant it was steamed up for most of our stay. There is a separate small toilet in the beer garden which can be used, but as the sink is attached to the back of the toilet it isn't ideal for brushing your teeth- so when using the main bathroom the steam made the mirror, sink etc difficult to use without getting soaked.

Tyckte om We stayed as a couple in the 1 pod they had on site which was clean and spacious with a fridge and kettle while our friends stayed in a camper on the field next to it. There's 1 shower and 2 toilets on site and pitches with electric hookup. We had an evening meal in the lowther arms and couldn't fault the quality and amount you got we highly recommend it. Through the day we walked to allonby which took about an hour each way but jacks surf bar doesn't allow dogs inside and the ship hotel does. We'll definitely return at some point.

Tyckte om Spacious pitches, although the only one camping. Great pub and food was fabulous! Staff couldn’t do enough for us.
Shower and toilet clean and tidy, although if full is the only shower. Accepted dogs on the site and in the pub.

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour). In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
