Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings – and take note again, the pub is closed on Monday and Tuesdays), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast National Landscape, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day, you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

喜欢 Lovely well kept site, shower and toilets spotless. The pub is community own so all and run by great staff. The food is delicious, very reasonably priced

来自经理: I am sorry you have given us a low score and a negative review. The grass is cut by ourselves every 2 weeks and our pitch costs are set per pitch not the per person. If you had enquired about this on arrival I would of been able to explain to you. We noticed that there was a note on your booking asking for the pitch to be discounted and if it was you would then come to food and drink.

喜欢 The pod was spacious and clean and milk, tea/coffee left for us. Nice tidy small site, great local pub and helpful , friendly staff. Be there only one shower and two toilets, extremely clean . Definately going to go again

We are a very small site and only have room for 1 shower block with the additional outside toilet, we never have a full site as it is important to us that everyone enjoys their stay and also have ample room around them to move and also have privacy so there would never be more than 4 pitches plus camping pod.

Perfect, perfect, perfect - and eat the chips!!!

喜欢 Everything! Small site, only 1 other pitch occupied, single shower unit with toilet and a proper electric shower so not having to keep hitting the push button to turn it on, plus separate toilet, short walk down to the beach, play park right outside for those with children as well as a small area with football goals, the campsite was simply perfect.
However, the star of the show was easily the pub. The staff were unbelievably welcoming and friendly, a standard of customer service I have not experienced in a long time, not just nice, above and beyond wonderful, they clearly love their jobs and their passion shines through. And the food, OH MY LIFE, whatever you order, make sure it comes with chips because they were the best chips I’ve ever tasted!! Myself, teenage son and his friend all had fish and chips, and the portions are so generous, it defeated us all.

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, we’ll certainly be back!

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour). In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
