  • Scenic, well-drained flat field on the edge of Heptonstall
  • A 20-minute walk to Hebden Bridge; Hardcastle Crags 10 minute's drive
  • Simple dog-friendly pitches; pubs, café and shop a short walk away
When you’re taking on the Pennine Way or filling your days exploring the likes of Hardcastle Crags, it's quite likely that you’ll be in the mood for a good feed and a decent drink at the end of the day. It's handy indeed, then, that Heptonstall Camping is one of those places where you can be out and about in proper countryside by day and then in the village pub come evening time. This simple and open site is right next to the Pennine Way with excellent views up towards Hardcastle Crags, so it’s no surprise to hear that it’s a great spot for walking, hiking and bike rides. And thankfully it’s also a great spot for those post-exertion treats – the site is on the edge of the hilltop village of Heptonstall, a short walk from its convenience store, excellent café and two pubs (both serving up good meals). For more options on all fronts, it’s a 20-minute walk down the hill to Hebden Bridge (with a bus service for the way back if you don’t fancy the climb). Pitches at Heptonstall Camping are on a well-drained and pleasingly flat field with good access from the road. It’s a ‘wild-style’ camping setup here, so please note there are no toilets or showers on site, and you’ll need to be self-contained on that front. You’ll be allowed to bring a barbecue along to cook your meals (please note no open fires, however) and dogs are welcome on site too.

Liked: Peaceful with beautiful scenery. Lovely views and very friendly owner.

Disliked: Very hard to find, got lost and no answer for directions on number provided. Just says campsite on the side of a container, which you can just about see from the road. I had no clue it was the right site other than asking other campers until the owner came later. All

Local attractions

Before setting off anywhere else, it’s worth taking a little wander around Heptonstall, visiting the museum and the church, where you can see poet Sylvia Plath’s final resting place in the graveyard. Meanwhile, down in Hebden Bridge (20 minutes' walk) you can poke around in independent shops and take a walk or cruise along the Rochdale Canal. Heading out into the countryside, you should certainly stop by for a walk along the many miles of paths at National Trust - Hardcastle Crags (10 minutes’ drive), in the grounds of a historic 19th-century mill. Bridestones Moor (10 minutes), Stoodley Pike (15 minutes) and Lumb Hole Falls (20 minutes) are some of the other local hotspots to seek out for a good walk. Up in Haworth (25 minutes), you can learn about the lives of the famed authors at the Brontë Parsonage Museum before taking a ride on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. For a family day out, try Eureka! The National Children’s Museum (half an hour), full of all sorts of interactive exhibits.
