  • Half an hour’s drive to Kielder Forest Park and 40 minutes to Cragside
  • Peaceful off-grid site; dogs welcome
Eager to explore Northumberland with the added benefit of superb countryside views? Hot-foot it to Bankfoot Camping near Stocksfield in Northumberland. The site is set on a level field on a working farm, completely surrounded by magnificent vistas, and it’s in pole position for discovering the delights of Kielder Forest Park and Northumberland National Park, or having a day out in Newcastle upon Tyne. There are modern and spotless showers on this small and peaceful rural site, but please note that as this is almost-wild camping, there is no electricity – and that means please bring torches from home for moving around the site at night. However, teens will be pleased to know that there are charging points for their devices. Forgot something important? There’s a community shop at Slaley (10 minutes’ drive), or for more major shopping expeditions, head for historic Hexham (15 minutes). Dogs are welcome at Bankfoot but please make sure they are under control at all times, as there is livestock on the farm.

Liked: I stayed at this campsite, and it was really nice. The owner was lovely. The campsite is peaceful, and the amenities are basic but good. Plus, it's just a short drive to a great village pub and Derwent Reservoir for some outdoor fun. Highly recommend!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Hot water in the shower with a tap that stayed on was a big bonus. The water got hot quickly too. The field is large and spacious with picnic benches and fire pits you can hire/use. It has stunning views of farm land and we saw lots of wild birds. We got a clear night and it was dark enough to see lots of star..we were also luck enough for it to be a blue moon which was stunning to see. I had a good chat with the owner who was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. I'd definitely recommend staying and plan to stay again in the future.

Disliked: My only reason for this not being five stars is that there wasn't really a designated washing up area which made it tricky for our stay. There was an outdoor cold water tap with clean water but it emptied directly onto the field. In the end I used the shower to wash up as it had hot running water. It did the job. The weather was against us on this visit and when we arrived it was really windy. The site is quite open and being a working farm doesn't have a tree line so the wind really blew through the field. Nothing can be done about that it's just worth noting In addition, due to all the wet weather the grass couldn't be cut. This meant it was just high enough to allow the wind to blow under the tent which was unpleasant. It's not the fault of the site owner who acknowledged this and was apologetic about it. If you are planning to camp as a family I would also not the road is a busy one. There is a gate to the field and the field is big enough to set up camp far from the road but if you have adventurous kids be cautious. I had no issues with my two and felt safe.

Local attractions

Northumberland is rich in history, stretching back to Roman times with the remains of Hadrian’s Wall (half an hour’s drive) and exhibitions at museums including the Roman Army Museum (40 minutes). Mighty medieval Alnwick Castle (an hour) has sumptuous apartments, Harry Potter film locations and poison gardens to explore, while National Trust - Cragside (40 minutes) has woodland walks (great in early summer for rhododendrons) and a mock-Gothic interior. Another fascinating day out can be had at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (half an hour) – pick a fine day to take a trip on an open-top tram or visit pit ponies in their stables. Get out and about in glorious Northumberland air at Kielder Water and Forest Park (half an hour), where you can cycle through woodland or walk around the reservoir – look out for the contemporary sculpture among the trees, and keep an eye peeled for elusive red squirrels. The skies above the park are the darkest in the UK, so linger on clear nights to see the Milky Way, or book a tour of Kielder Observatory (an hour).
