Large field in the middle of the yorkshire dales

  • Peaceful site in the Yorkshire Dales, five minutes’ drive from Settle
  • Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk 10 minutes’ drive; Morecambe 55 minutes
  • Underfloor-heated shower block built in natural limestone
Straddling the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lodge Park is a well-maintained site that will appeal to those who fancy a peaceful retreat, perhaps punctuated by invigorating walks through the surrounding woodland. Dogs are welcome here, so you can have your best friend by your side as you explore the local paths – not to mention the caves and waterfalls for which this area is known. If you want to sink your teeth into something more challenging, the trailhead for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk (which takes in Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) is a 10-minute drive away. Alternatively, you can admire the countryside from the comfort of the train on the Settle–Carlisle heritage railway (Settle station is about a mile away). Keen golfers, meanwhile, might prefer to while a few hours away on the greens at Settle and Giggleswick Golf Club (five minutes’ drive). On site, the toilet/shower block has been built with natural limestone, in keeping with other edifices in the area. On a chilly Yorkshire evening, you’ll no doubt be grateful for the underfloor heating in these quarters, which also include disabled facilities. The market town of Settle (five minutes), with its cute stone cottages, has numerous cafés and restaurants, traditional pubs and independent shops.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Reasonable site for a cheap price.
Not far from the center of Settle.

Disliked Amenities weren't the best but weren't the worst. The site is packed full of all different walks of life and quite noisy throughout the day and night.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Not alot.

Disliked We were put off by the mixed reviews but booked as another caravan site recommended it to us. We wish we had trusted our instincts and stayed at home.

We stayed on a weekend in August when the site was crowded including a number of large groups (six plus vehicles) and as a result noisy until into the early hours. It is close to the railway line and the owner spent most of the evening driving around the site on his quad bike selling fire pits and fire wood. Not the quiet relaxing rural break we had hoped for.

There were two male, two female and two porter loos for the whole site. Totally inadequate for the number of people staying. They and the four showers were dirty due to numbers using them. There were about fifty vehicles on the field we stayed on, a second field plus many caravans.

We had wanted a hardstanding for our caravan but we're glad we had a grass pitch as the caravan hardstanding was like a shanty town the caravans were packed in so tight with no regard for fire spacing used on other sites.

On arrival the owner was not available at reception so we followed instructions to find a pitch. He drove past twice whilst we were setting up and again in the evening but did not speak to us. He then confronted us the next day in an intimidating manor in front of our children accusing us if using the site without booking before he had even asked to see booking information.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Space and location. Nice views of the surrounding hills. The owner seemed quite liberal and free from rules. This was really pleasant.

Disliked Some individuals prayed on the liberal approach which was a shame. Only a minority but one dog in particular was left to roam the site, some guests were noisy (take ear plugs), and some drove a bit too fast across the site. These things were left unchallenged.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked This was a real gem of a find. It's a fairly basic campsite just outside Settle - easy walk even with a tweenager in tow! Plenty of Takeaways, co-op etc nearby as well as a petrol station.
The site is a large grassed area, pitches aren't marked out but we found everyone was respectful and sensible about using space courteously and respectfully. I liked that the site was essentially a field.
Showers and toilets were accessible 24/7. Fire pits were available to hire with logs and fire lighters included - we had enough wood to light ours again in the morning. The staff delivered the pits to our tent in the quad bike which was really kind.
There was a sink available for washing up (with hot water).
Plenty of bins available as well. The site was clean and tidy.

Disliked Nothing. This campsite dis exactly what it said on the tin. Doesn't have loads of facilities or amenities but it's a campsite not a holiday park.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Easy to find. Hot showers and flushing toilets. Plenty of toilet paper, and hand soap available. Drinking water available on tap. Soft grass to pitch on. Bins available.

Disliked Noisy campers playing guitar and singing off-key until the wee hours of the night. Toilet block too far away (and uphill) from pitches. Dirty portaloos, and mens toilets and showers. Pitches are in a valley which made my tent soaking wet in the morning, something to consider when picking a campsite next time.

Local attractions

Don a hard hat and take a stroll deep into the bowels of the earth at Ingleborough Cave (20 minutes’ drive). Here, you can admire stalactites, stalagmites and other spectacular rock formations sculpted by water over many millennia, plus subterranean ponds. Dominated by a well-preserved medieval castle, Skipton (30 minutes) is on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which you can explore from the comfort of a cruise boat or, if you feel comfortable around swing bridges, from your own hired narrow boat. On the outskirts of town, Raven Tree Top Adventure has hanging bridges and ziplines. Spend a day at the seaside in Morecambe (55 minutes), where you can take a leisurely stroll (or cycle ride) along the promenade, check out the trampoline park and have fish and chips alfresco, as you gaze upon the vast mudflats of Morecambe Bay. The mudflats might look inviting, but they’re notoriously treacherous, with quicksands and fast-moving tides, so you’re advised to stay off them.
