  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very clean and tidy toilet and shower blocks. We particularly liked the new block due to the spacious shower cubicles (each with a handy bench and several hooks for clothing), but the other ones were perfectly serviceable too.
It is close to the 'main' road so only a short walk to access local bus services to Richmond, the local shop (surprisingly well stocked) and the nearest pub for drinks and / or meals. It's only a short walk to access public footpaths as well.

Disliked Most of the other campers were generally quiet and adhered to the no loud music / TV rule but there were a couple of parties on the Friday (our last night) who we had to ask to turn down their TVs. This may be partly down to some conflicting signage as whilst the booking confirmation says between 9 and 9, the signage says between 10 and 8 (I've mentioned this to the owners). On the whole though it did not spoil our stay too much.

Powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It’s the perfect site. Quiet, level, good grass. Beautiful toilet blocks which must only be six months to a year old and kept lovely and clean. An easy reach 10 minutes from Richmond and 5 mins walking to Brompton with the Crown as a nice pub. A1 North south only 10 minutes away.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
