  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: Really peaceful site. Simple check in, name and pitch number is on a board. Site owner popped over to see us after we'd been there about an hour. Very spacious pitches. Less than 10 minutes drive to Richmond.

Disliked: Only 6amp electricity so we has issues with it cutting out. Once we realised what we could use and couldn't it was fine. Not sure I could do more than a couple of nights due to that. Basic toilet/shower but overall OK.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: Lovely quiet site, great pitches. Had a lovely overnight stay and will definitely be back. Liked how we received our pitch number by email so knew exactly where we were going when we got there. Homemade jam, marmalade and fresh eggs for sale in an honesty box at the gate a nice touch.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: The pitch was good size and electric and water on the pitch which was great.

Disliked: Nobody welcomed us just a board with our names on with pitch number. Only one shower and one toilet in a portacabin. The cabin was absolutely freezing with no heating whatsoever and the shower was only like warm and gave burst of cold water every time restarted. Very inadequate and uncomfortable. The ground was waterlogged but that was due to the amount of rain.

From the manager: We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay with us, unfortunately we don't have a reception or a warden as we are a very small site. We do have 2 toilet/shower blocks on site and both are heated, the cabin block has 2 toilets and a shower in each side and instructions to let the water draw through if its not been used in a while.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The pitch was quite big so could pitch a good size tent . The toilet block was clean with two toilets and one shower . Site was peaceful with the only noise being the rain and the river

Disliked: The only letdown was that there was no way to dry out my wet bike gear as the toilet blocks only had one small pipe by way of heat source ..

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we will have a look at what we can do as a drying room.

Liked: Can't fault the site peaceful and quiet.

Disliked: The low amp electric and current shower facilities let the site down, but it looked as though a toilet block may be being built

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we are building a new shower block and upping our electric supply but these are taking longer and costing more than anticipated.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
