  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

What customers say

Brilliant adults-only, dog-friendly spot. Praised for its peace, level pitches, and handy A1/village access. Facilities are basic but clean, though some noted a need for updates, with a new block coming. The 6-amp hook-up can be limiting for some. Despite minor gripes, it's a great, relaxing stopover and many would happily return.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked Pitch was fine, good size, nice local walks, once we found them and good local pub within walking distance.

Disliked As we had not been to the area before we did not know any local walks. It would’ve been nice for the owners to have some details of suggested walks in the area, given that the site is unmanned and there is no one to ask when you are there. Even if it was just a photo of some walks that could be done directly from the site that you could take a photo of, would be very helpful.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked Site was conveniently placed not too far from the A1, it was extremely well placed to visit Richmond (10 mins drive) and indeed the rest of the areas main sites. The site itself was very spacious, well kept and quiet, access was also very good not miles down a single track road! Did not really see any staff but was told by a frequent visitor who revisit two or three times every year that the staff are excellent.

Disliked No real dislikes at the time of our visit (late April) my only observation was that the outside light on the single gents toilet wasn't working along with a number of pitch lights, not really a problem these days as most people carry mobile phones with lights.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked Clean site. We had no issues at all with the ehu. Multiple devices connected. Site Easy to find. Not far from the road where can flag busses down to take you to richmond.

Disliked The newer toilet/shower had a bad smell maybe plumbing problems? But was still clean.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, sorry about the smell in the toilet block, our new facilities will be open soon :-))

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
