  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

What customers say

A peaceful, adults-only spot with roomy, flat sites and good EHU. Handy for village shops and walks. Cleanliness and owner chat get good marks. Facilities are basic but warm and fine, though can get tight when busy. New loos/showers coming.

Liked Pitch reasonably level. EHU good. Single toilet & shower very clean and warm.

Disliked Slight hum from the A1. No drive over grey waste that I could see. Little too expensive really. (£35/night - one adult in 6.5m mho)

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked Friendly and helpful owners who loaned me a hook up cable while I overcome a fault with my own. Good policy to stay at a site within 2 miles of two caravan accessories shops! Each hard standing pitch had their own water tap so I was able to use the Wastemaster kit for the first time to have water on demand. The electrical outlet was close by as well.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Both toilet blocks were cleaned on a regular basis. The new toilet facilities seem to be close to completion so even better opportunities in the future.

Liked Great little spot! No fuss, just pitch up- easy check-in. Well maintained site with spotless amenities. Fantastic communication with the owners, readily available via text for queries. Location good for the village or only a 2 mile walk to Richmond for more to do.
Really peaceful on an evening. We will definitely be back!

Liked Lovely quiet site. Easily accessed. Good communication from the Owners.
Huge hardstanding & grass electric pitch with water. Decent 5G signal on the pitch too. Very nice pub in the village, 10 minutes walk away, together with a post office and general store. (The walk is all on footpaths too, so nice and safe). Loads to do and see within a short drive - Richmond, Catterick and the surroundings. Good shower and toilet - though only one each.

Liked Location, size of the pitch, lovely and quiet.

Disliked No dog walk on site, however 2 minute walks away down a disused railway line dogs could run free safely off the lead.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
