Liked Nice setting

Disliked Not great communication - I appreciate challenges with the recent fire but would have appreciated being told the road was open and we could access and also that the beach steps were closed. I was also made to change the way round I parked yet I was the only person in the entire field

Liked Nothin

Disliked Very poor customer service. I appreciate that things must have been very difficult with the heath fire but we have had no direct communication with the camp site about our booking for well over a week now. In the end we had to cancel and make alternative arrangements. We spoke to customer service twice at Pitchup who promised to get back to us but never did. It remains to be seen whether we get a refund.

Liked We were booked to arrive on the Friday when the heath fire started.

Having seen the news we knew we wouldn’t be going.

The site telephoned us to explain the situation. We received further updates over the weekend and have been told we can arrange to stay for free later in the year. The site also offered us a free trip to Africa Alive which we chose to offer back to any other family that would benefit more than us.

Disliked Absolutely nothing, customer service was fantastic.

Powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked Lovely location, park and bar area nice. Large pitch and decent flat surface for tent. Staff friendly and helpful. Felt safe and welcoming for young children to play.

Disliked Toilets not the best we’d seen and only one block quite a long way from our pitch, not good for middle of the night. Unpleasant sewage smell on site when first arrive but did clear by evening thankfully. Little or no phone signal on site.

Local attractions

Cute-as-a-picture seaside towns include Southwold (20 minutes’ drive), where you can tour Adnams Brewery and the lighthouse, browse smart shops and eat fish and chips on the pier; Aldeburgh (25 minutes) is well-known for tours of the arts and crafts Red House, former home of composer Benjamin Britten, and Suffolk-born Maggi Hambling’s vast ‘Scallop’ sculpture on the beach. Still on the coast, Thorpeness (25 minutes) is set around the Meare boating lake; it is also gateway to the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, criss-crossed with wildlife walks and cycle rides. If you’d rather not stray so far from base camp, RSPB Minsmere (10 minutes) is another great day out for wildlife lovers, with family-friendly opportunities to take part in pond dipping and den building. There are also family-centric activities like felting and archaeology talks at Dunwich Museum (five minutes), where you can learn about the ‘Lost City’ – Dunwich was once a thriving medieval port that slowly slipped into the sea due to erosion and storm surges.
