  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Liked Everything to like here! Staff and owner are so helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Site is very clean, very well maintained, pub and its outdoor space with tvs and plenty of tables are just fab while the kids are playing on the park. We had an issue with our caravan and the owner and staff went out of their way to make sure we were okay. Dog run and plenty of lovely walks. Thank you for a great adventure!

Disliked Nothing a great stay.

Liked Everything, we came in our campervan with our 3 autistic children, the site was brilliant for both adults and children, the park was ideal for our 3 to play on, the animals were also brill as they loved seeing them. The pitches were spacious, the toilets and showers were immaculate. We ate in the pub twice in our 3 night stay and the food was amazing, the pies and burgers are huge, but also all fresh ingredients. Although summer holidays it felt peaceful and relaxing being a smaller site. The staff on the grounds and in the pub were really friendly and welcoming, especially one of the groundsman he was amazing with our children (you pretended to be an alien, you know who you are. Thank you) we enjoyed it that much that myself and my husband are returning next week for our one night break (the first in 6 months) would definitely recommend to anybody. The surrounding area is also beautiful definitely wouldn't think you was so close to stoke. See you again soon. Thanks again for a brill 3 night stay..

Liked Staff at pub and site were great.
Facilities all very good.
Location is good with walks and another pub in the village and Foxfield railway on the door step.

Disliked Wood pile in corner of dog exercise field needs fencing off, nails and screws sticking out of timber could harm the dogs.
Also felt having to pay extra for a second dog was a bit strong.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Stev
Thanks for the Great comments etc. we have loads o attraction on our doorstep for customers to enjoy ,
The Dog field is a new ideal and only just starting we will be improving as time goes on The wood pile is the start of our November Bonfire date ,
But we take on board you comment ,
The extra Dog may seem harsh but we cant be over run with dogs before we introduced this people have come with x4/5 Dogs 😒

Liked Facilities spotless. Old fashioned and lovely pub literally on the site. Check-in was nice and easy. Staff SUPER friendly. Very nice layout with clearly seperated bays, fresh water and EHU easy accessible

Disliked When setting up the gravel pitches it wouldve been easy to make them more level to save motorhomes and campervans the hassle of using ramps. There was a bit of rubbish in the bushes at our spot.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
