  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

What customers say

This well-kept site offers spacious, clean pitches with electric hookups and water. Guests rave about friendly staff, the pub's great food/atmosphere, and the charming rural setting. New toilet/shower blocks are a big upgrade. While usually quiet, some mention pub garden noise. Limited facilities noted, but upgrades are planned. Highly recommended; many plan to return.

Liked Our first stay at Charlie’s and it definitely won’t be our last. So glad we turned our 1 night stay into 2 nights.
We arrived on Friday evening to a busy pub but, regardless of this, we had an instant warm welcome and we were shown to our pitch straight away.
The pitches are immaculate, large and nice and level. The site is very pretty, with lovely views from the pitches. Each pitch has its own wooden picnic bench, which was much appreciated by us because we forgot our table.
The toilets and showers are modern, warm and are kept very clean.
The pub itself is an absolute gem, cosy, full of charm and friendly staff and the home cooked food is amazing. The mixed grill is a belly-buster!! We saved some sausages for a butty the next morning. Thank you Susan!
We did a lovely 7.5 mile circular walk from the site, across public footpaths and farmland, finished off with a pint of Guinness and the most amazing sausage roll from the pub.
At 8:30pm on Saturday they had bingo in the pub, which definitely livened
things up! I was pleased to call my first ever house and got a nice bottle of red wine for my prize. The husband also called on a line and won a free drink, so definitely give the bingo a go.
Thanks for a great stay!

Liked Good size pitches which had electric and water attached so that was really handy.
Staff were really friendly and very helpful.
The pub itself was great, ate in there on the Saturday night and the food was fantastic and a really good sized meal.
The toilets and showers were kept clean
This was the second time we'd stayed here and we wouldn't of come back if we didn't like it.
Would defo recommend to friends

Disliked Not a dislike, just an opinion really.
The grey waste sink was a little awkward to empty our waste master as had to lift it up and balance it on the sink, quite difficult when is full. Don't think the wife would have been able to manage it

Liked Brilliant site. Very quiet, beautiful scenery, relaxing. The managers were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The toilets and showers were very clean, the water piping hot. Lots of lovely walks to be had in all directions. There is water and electricity on the pitch and every pitch has a new picnic bench which is great. The pitches are spacious so you are not on top of anyone else. There is a large play area and some little goats as well. The pub is lovely, cosy and welcoming, the food is delicious and the site and the pub are reasonable prices. We would definately stay again.

Disliked We couldnt connect to wifi.

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We stayed two nights (our second time here) in our TentBox alongside friends who were using their campervan. We thought all the staff were very friendy and helpful. The meals are excellent. We loved the Friday music night (although the acoustic set really didnt need amplification as the pub is not that large). We loved the pubs first Bingo night (and our table of 6 won 4 prizes! ). The toilet shower block is kept clean.

Disliked Luke warm water in the mens shower on our second morning (it was cool outside so maybe effects the water temperature?). When the site is busy, I can see the mens block only having one shower, being a problem. There are two in the Ladies. Also only having one sink, means that if somene is wet shaving, you cant use the sink after using the toilet. Maybe removing the urinals and installing another sink/shower would be a good move?

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked This has always been one of our favourite sites, but hadn't been for a while. Guess what? It's now even better!
Pitches are beautifully kept, new toilet and shower block which was immaculate.
The one thing that hasn't changed is the friendliness of the staff, they are brilliant.
Even the torrential rain couldn't spoil our weekend, we just popped in the pub, dogs and all, for beer, food and fun.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
