General

  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest

Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails.

As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake.

Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Please note

Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.

Unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worst before our arrival, we where accommodated very well by the owners and a place was found for us to stay on site. Lots of walkers to do from the site which was good because we took are 2 dogs and lots of places to visit without travelling to far with our granddaughters 2 , 7 years old. This was a great place to stay toilet facilities very clean options of breakfast from reception, we will definitely be returning

My Daughter and I were really pleased with the pod we stayed in, it was really warm and comfy.
Staff were friendly and welcoming and really good facilities. Lots of lovely places to eat within a few miles.

    Disliked:

Shame there wasn’t anywhere to hand our coats (it rained) and a mat in the door way to contain the wet and mud.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your review and recommendation. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay in the pod and hope to welcome you back in the future. Thank you also for the suggestion of coat hooks and a door mat - this is something that we hadn't thought of and we will be adding these to our 'to-do list' for next season!

Lovely compact site with all the amenities you need set in a quiet rural area. Great price. Friendly, helpful staff. Hot drinks and breakfast snacks available in the A.M. (and very tasty!). Good clean toilets and showers maintained daily (lights are motion sensored so be prepared to finish your shower/toilet in the dark!) Great access routes for Tintern Abbey, Monmouth, Chepstow, Forest of Dean and beyond. Would recommend to all and visit again tomorrow.

Rural quiet clean and tidy site and facilities were spotlessly clean as well. Staff were friendly and polite.
Site has showers toilets laundry and washing facilities with a small general shop on site that did hot drinks, brekie rolls in the mornings from 0830 to 1000 which were lovely. Site was quiet when we were there end of season but it had everything you need for a great stay. Site is very quiet and dark at night.
They had made up portable fire pits to hire and logs for sale.

Wonderful site for a peaceful holiday. Definately going back next year10/16/2023

The site was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Lovely walks nearby. Toilets and showers were spotless. We are already planning a return trip next year. I would recommend this site to anyone.

    Disliked:

Not disliked but just a little suggestion. More hard-standing pitches are needed. The pitches we were booked on were very boggy and our friends got stuck in the mud. The owners were quick to react and gave us hard-standing pitches straight away but we had to move off before the end of the holiday as our pitches were booked. More hard standing and this site will be even more wonderful.

From the manager...

Hi Pauline
Thank you for your lovely review! You will be pleased to know that we are already planning more hard-standing pitches and so hopefully this will resolve the issues we had this year. We are also hoping to change the driveway and look forward to welcoming you back!
Thank you :-)

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away.

Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site.

Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
