  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space for ball games and dog walking. Guests here can hire firepits (including wood) from the site. Off-ground barbecues are also welcome: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

What customers say

This is a clean, well-maintained campsite with friendly staff and spacious pitches. Facilities are modern and consistently praised. It's ideally located for exploring the Forest of Dean, with easy walking access to Coleford. The on-site shop and cafe are popular. Some guests noted the access road is steep and bumpy, and younger children might find the play area limited, though a park is nearby.

Bell tent

Liked Very spacious tent. Very clean and comfortable. Excellent facilities including 1 ring gas cooker, cutlery and dishes. The site itself is lovely and quiet, loads of walks nearby, including easy walk into Coleford. Lots of shops in Coleford if you need supplies.

Disliked Only 1 small pot for cooking. However excellent hardware shop in town where I bought a new frying pan!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Oh no! I am really sorry about the lack of pots! The previous guest burnt the other and I had to throw it away - I meant to replace it but completely forgot. If you had popped to reception and let us know, we would have got a replacement. We will get that done!
Thanks for the great review. The tent would usually come with a BBQ too and log burner or firepit but we are advised against naked flame in the heat wave so have removed them. We do hope to welcome you back!

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
