Greenacres Campsite: Camping pod exterior

General

  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest

Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails.

As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake.

Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

The large pitch sizes. The onsite shop selling coffees and breakfast baps to order. Facilites were really good. The site is well signposted and in easy walk to Coleford town where there are lots of food options to cater for everyone. Or small supermarkets for essentials.

Amazing, spacious and outstandingly clean facilities. Well stocked shop with hot food options and milkshakes! Pitches were good size too. The surrounding area is up there with the most beautiful parts of Britain; Symonds Yat is a hidden gem and there is so much to explore on the river.

    Disliked:

Whilst not really the fault of the camp site, the roads to get there are extremely challenging with a touring caravan, so it will take some prior route planning if you have a tourer.

Very nice little on site shop with most things. Really good pitch sizes for hardstanding pitches.

Everything. We had pitch number 3, which was very spacious, few steps from the shop, water and toilet/shower/washing up block. Facilities were spotless and well maintained, shop well stocked and not overpriced. My son had sausage bap twice and the coffee was lovely too. All staff very friendly and informative. The okay area was pretty busy as it is quite limited but there is a lovely walk to the outskirts of coleford with a huge play area and that was fab. Everything is in the door step too and we visited puzzlewood, forest of Dean sculpture walk and Symons Yat viewpoint. The Perrygrove railway left us disappointed as it was very expensive for what you get and facilities were dated and some equipment even dangerous, the lady in ticket office said it was being refurbished in three week but they are still charging full pay.
We will be back to this site, it's the best site we've ever been to so far. Plus the possibility of renting the fire pit was fab too.

    Disliked:

WiFi is chargeable at £1 per day per device and I feel this should be included in pitch price.

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away.

Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site.

Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
