Spacious pitches

General

  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest

Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails.

As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake.

Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Nice large pitches so even when our awning was up next to our van there was still plenty of room on the grass. The site was very clean and tidy and social distancing was observed. The site has its pitches grouped in areas separated by hedges which is nice rather than big open fields.
The little shop serves ice creams, cakes, hot and cold drinks.
All the staff were really friendly.
They have fire pits you can hire.
There is a large field with an assault type play area.
Nearby is the town of Coleford which has a selection of supermarkets and restaurants. We visited the Kings Head Hotel for a couple of refreshments before our walk back, it is a dog friendly bars and also has seating in the yard, Very friendly staff.
There are some nice woodland walks in the area.

    Disliked:

There was nothing about the site I disliked.
My only concern is that other campers with dogs near us just let their dogs wander around off a lead and we had to clear up dog excrement from our pitch.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review! I am pleased that you like the site and look forward to welcoming you again. I've purchased some new signs reminding people to keep their dogs on a lead and pick up after them. These are in our rules and it is dis-appointing when dog owners ignore them.

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away.

Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site.

Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
