Greenacres Campsite: Pod

General

  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest

Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails.

As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake.

Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

It is set in fields but once you've worked it out there's good access to the forest on footpaths from near the campsite leading all the way to Symonds Yat. Great dog walks nearby.

    Clean and well laid out

    Disliked:

No heating in showers and quite cold. Shop more or less shut down so none of the advertised services available. Owner spent most of her time at home rather than on site.
Location of toilet waste point remote from camp site, a problem if you are of limited mobility. No grey water disposal point for motorhomes. Although the rules and regulations for campers were very extensive they obviously were not given to all campers on site.

From the manager...

Dear Mr & Mrs Mullett
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The camping season is coming to an end and to restock the shop at such a late date would be a bit crazy although we do still have the basics, tea coffee, snacks etc but not our usual range - we are a mile from Coleford with several supermarkets so there is never an issue with obtaining supplies. Breakfast baps were available every day and reception was manned between 9 and 12 every day during your stay.
The windows are open in the shower block (due to Covid) but you could have closed them or if you had asked, we would have done so.
We only have 12 pitches available this time of year and so to sit in reception all day when most people are offsite makes no sense I am afraid, but my home is onsite and you only had to call the number advertised on the door and I would have come up to see you. We have CCTV and I was working in my home office, not putting my feet up!
I hope that helps - we are grateful for your feedback but it would have been great if you had mentioned these things when you were here and we could have accommodated your needs a bit better. We will act on it and will ensure people booking in October know that reception will be part time during this time.
Thank you

From the manager...

Hi Stuart
Thanks for your feedback. Sadly the torrential rain did mean that your grass pitch quickly became muddy. Unfortunately we did not have a hard-standing pitch available to move you to. We do hope you will come back in drier sunnier times!
Kind regards
Maureen

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away.

Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site.

Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
