  • Adults-only site 10 minutes from Pencader in the Teifi valley
  • Riding centre, mountain bike trails and kayaking within 15 minutes
  • Quiet, eco-friendly site with free-range eggs and a veg patch
Peace, proper peace… how fab. The Old Post Office Eco Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from Pencader, is a quiet rural site that’s all set up for souls seeking a bit of serenity. Noisy distractions are kept to a minimum here: no kids, no TVs and no radios are allowed on site, and limited mobile phone reception means you should remain refreshingly free from dinging gadgets. There is, however, a bit of clucking: that's from the ex-battery hens that generously provide eggs to be delivered for your brekkie if you let the site owners know you fancy it; in return, put a coin or two in the contributions box when picking veg and herbs from the gardens and polytunnel – it all goes towards buying their treats. As you'll have spied from the name, greener living is important here: guests are requested not to bring chemicals on site and instead to use the eco-friendly cleaning products and bamboo loo roll provided. And that’s not all that’s provided: a selection of games, books and maps is to hand, and there’s a collection of bits of camping kit lest you find you’ve forgotten something vital. For eats, you're welcome to light up a barbie or firepit, and there are a couple of pubs serving top-notch food a mile and a half away.

Local attractions

Ready for a ramble? Leave the car behind and set out on a walk along the banks of the Teifi river from the site. Hillier hikes can be had at the Llanllwni, Llanybydder and Pencarreg mountains (all within a 10-minute drive); a family-run riding centre 15 minutes away can arrange for you to see the stunning scenery on a horseback trek instead. Not done yet? Make a break for the Brechfa Forest (10 minutes’ drive), where there are more walking routes and some fab mountain bike trails for all abilities to speed along, or leg it to Llandysul (10 minutes) for a whole heap of adventures including kayaking, coasteering and rock climbing. After all this it’s possible you’ll need a couple of gentler outings: take it a bit easier with a wander round the National Botanic Garden of Wales (35 minutes’ drive), have a ride on the narrow-gauge Teifi Valley Railway (10 minutes) or take tasty trips to the New Quay Honey Farm (25 minutes) and the Caws Teifi cheese farm (20 minutes), home of the medal-winning Celtic Promise.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Everything. A warm and friendly welcome. Beautiful surroundings, wonderful pitch, lovely facilities. Karen and Rikki have thought of everything and more. Forgotten something? They'll probably have it in the barn. From firepits to spare chairs. With only 4 pitches, you have space to stretch out. And an amazing cooked breakfast delivered to your tent. The peace and quiet was blissful. This really is my idea of heaven.

Disliked: Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: What a fantastic little site! We loved our stay here and were looked after from the first minute (a pot of tea brought to our tent!) to the last by Karen and Rikki. After being given a tour of the wonderfully quirky facilities they left us to enjoy the flowery meadow and the view from the hilltop where we'd pitched our tent. Karen and Rikki also do a breakfast (delivered to your tent!) which is honestly beyond words. Never before has this happened to us on a camp site and I'm not sure it ever will again. If you're after piece and quiet, chickens and friendly hosts, this is definitely the site for you.

Disliked: Nothing at all

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing stay. The campsite was beyond my expectations, the facilities were spotlessly clean and the views were just lovely. The pitches were nicely spaced out and the unused areas were left for wild flowers to grow. The owners Karen and Rikki were just delightful, very friendly, full of advice and willing to help wherever they could, whilst allowing you space. On arrival we were greeted with cups of tea then on our first morning we had a full cooked breakfast delivered to our tent. The breakfast was delicious. I would highly recommend a stay here, it’s an excellent place for rewinding, technology detoxing, a bit of reading or writing or possibly some painting if the mood takes you.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: 100% recommend. Everything about this site is about as perfect as I could imagine. The owners are the most hospitable and friendly people. Karen even made me a cup of tea on arrival before showing me round the whole site! There's a very thoughtful store room with spare tables, chairs, books, games and camping equipment in case you've forgotten anything, or, if like me you've travelled light on a motorbike, the fact I could borrow a table and comfy camping chair was absolute luxury. The facilities are in great condition, very clean and fully working. If the girls Meghan, Morgana et al have laid any eggs, I can thoroughly recommend these too. Wonderfully tasty free range ones :-) The site and the surrounding area are as quiet and peaceful as the site description makes out. Great location for getting out on the bike around fabulous twisty roads through beautiful forests, valleys, villages, over the mountains and over to the west coast. Brilliant ecological ethos throughout the place too. Bliss!

Disliked: Only that it's over 5 hours away from home!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Dave, Many thanks for taking the time to review our site. It was a pleasure to meet you and have you stay here. The girls say "cluck, cluck" and are delighted you enjoyed their eggs. Each camper that comes to stay with us raises money to rescue more ex battery hens, so thank you so much for choosing us. We would love to welcome you back again, after all there are plenty more beautiful Welsh roads to discover :-). Hope you got home safely and dry. All the best from us here in Maesycrugiau. Karen and Rikki :-) P.S. We're sorry we are not closer to you but hope 5 hours isn't too long to make the return trip worthwhile :-)
