  • Eco-friendly Highlands glamping with lovely views near Dornoch
  • A 10-minute drive from the North Coast 500; Dunrobin Castle 20 minutes
  • Insulated, off-grid shepherd’s hut; camping kitchen and outdoor shower
Looking for a comfy Scottish hideaway from which to explore the northern Highlands? One with excellent eco credentials too? Your search may well be over, for Fiddlers Green is 10 minutes' drive from Dornoch in Sutherland, and the off-grid shepherd’s hut is designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Fully insulated and heated by woodburner to guard against Scottish winters, the hut has a pretty, handmade decor and vintage bedding on the double bed. Sustainable facilities include a cold-water shower in the (walled and therefore private) veggie garden, and a compost loo with a woodland view. Outside a firepit is provided for campfires. There’s a complimentary box of firewood to start you off and more can be bought for a small charge. Basic cooking and washing-up facilities are located in the sun room at the main house, including a fridge, hob, electric kettle and tabletop oven. This being northern Scotland, it may be handy to know there’s also plenty of room for drying clothes and boots. Fantastic walks, wildlife sightings, dark skies (on clear nights) and aurora watching (best from October to March) are all possible from the shepherd’s hut – and if you’re cycling the North Coast 500, there’s a secure, lockable shed for safe bike storage. A couple of house rules: the site owners ask kindly that you don’t use disposable barbecues, and please note that pets are not permitted, as the area around the shepherd’s hut is unfenced.

Local attractions

You can start exploring right from the shepherd’s hut. Badninish (five minutes’ walk) is a small crofting community surrounded by majestic hills and teeming with nature – get out and about on foot in Clashnagrave Wood (20 minutes’ walk). A little further afield, jump in the car and drive part of the North Coast 500 trail to majestic Dunrobin Castle and Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) or to the pretty settlement of Helmsdale (40 minutes). Seaside Dornoch (10 minutes’ drive) has seemingly endless sandy beaches to meander along, as well as a medieval cathedral. Find out about local traditions at the Historylinks Museum. Golfing addicts can play on a links or championship course, and cyclists can set off on a circular route taking in Loch Buidhe (an hour’s cycle) from the town. Budding naturalists stand a very good chance of spotting seals banking on sandbanks at Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive), where ospreys can sometimes be seen too. Anglers keen to catch salmon in season will need to book ahead to fish on the River Helmsdale (40 minutes).
