‘Big’ is the word we’re picking for Perthshire. It’s known as ‘the big county’ because of its size and its variety of towns and villages, but it’s also called ‘Big Tree Country’ for its neck-craning specimens all around (bring the camera to Diana’s Grove at Blair Castle), and has the biggest and longest hedge in the world near Meikleour. This one gets a trim every ten years or so, but we’re betting it’s still fairly easy to spot.

The big county is also the home of Scotland’s oldest pub, the site of Macbeth's hill top fortress Dunsinane Hill – the real Macbeth, that is, not the Bard version – and the oldest and smallest distilleries on the Malt Whisky Trail. Perthshire campsites and holiday parks include several that are open all year for whisky trailing or big tree spotting in any season: you can also search for Perthshire sites using the ‘open now’ filter, or enter your holiday dates in our availability finder.
