  • Well-equipped holiday park among Ayr's 30+ castles
  • Indoor pool, solarium, wildlife trails and kids' clubs for ages 4-15
  • Entertainment venue, bar-restaurant and fish and chip shop
Hmmm, here’s a compelling conundrum for someone at Sundrum Castle Holiday Park: with more than 30 cracking castles tucked into the landscape around Ayr, which on earth should you visit first? And even if you stay on site, it’s decisions, decisions thanks to the packed programme of entertainment and activities at all hours of the day. Ditherers, you have been warned. Daytime choices include a splash about on the flume at the indoor pool, a relaxing session in the solarium, 10-pin bowling, a round of crazy golf, a deerstalking stroll around the wildlife trails, or a game of five-a-side or basketball. For kids, there’s a mind-boggling selection of fun sessions in the kids’ clubs for ages four to 15. As night falls, take your pick of competitions, live music, cabaret, dancing and comedy in the on-site entertainment venue. As for food, the Tam O’Shanter bar-restaurant has a comprehensive set of food and drink options including freshly brewed Costa Coffee, or you could just grab a bite from the fish and chip shop. So, if you’re after an unspoilt country setting close to fab beaches and some of Scotland’s top tourist attractions, Sundrum Castle Holiday Park may well be the perfect spot. (Phew, at least that's one decision made…)

Great for families, clean, friendly staff, excellent pool & play areas. Pitches spacious. Some Wi-Fi issues, noisy neighbours & dated toilets mentioned. Food pricey for some. Good value overall, highly recommended.

Liked The pool was great.
Playpark was decent.

Disliked Touring pitches sat directly on the back of the playpark. Eslan waste point was uncovered and directly next to the drinking water tap. Facilities were basic with the toilets rarely flushing meaning they were left full of other peoples filth. Poor signage on the route in and the satnav automatically routes down a very dangerous, impassable and private road.

Unpowered grass tent site (no pets)

Liked The swimming pool and slide were excellent and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

Disliked The tent pitch was awful. Like a muddy bog.
The deliveries to the shop were really early so we were woken up at 5:30 most mornings.

Liked Not much to like for an adult opinion but I can imagine the pool for kids is fun.

Disliked Paid for hardstanding but Pitch was muddy and flooded very easily even though we were higher than other pitches that didn’t flood. Toilets bad but the worst showers (if you can call them that) two showers for the camp site and one doesn’t have a lock, have to hold the shower head as it doesn’t fit on the wall, freezing and dirty. Felt cleaner before trying to navigate the showers. Kids allowed to play football until 11pm when pitch is next to the camping area

Liked Nothing. It was the worst site we have ever stayed at!

Disliked Touring pitch 14, backed onto kids play park, very noisy, kids screaming and yelling all day until 23:30 at night. No noise restrictions. Kids throwing sand at our caravan.

The pitch itself wasn’t maintained, the ground was slippery with moss.

The touring water point - water flow was just a trickle, taking such a long time to fill the aqua roll.

The facilities were filthy, used toilet roll all over the floor every day, the showers full
of sand. One shower head in the ladies with a broken holder so nowhere to hang up the shower head. No lock on the same shower cubicle.

Overall, we did not enjoy our holiday due to the noise, dirty facilities and poor maintained pitches.

Would never go back!

Liked Touring caravan in march for two nights.
Phone signal and Wi-Fi weak on our pitch, but that's not a bad thing for us.
Lovely well kept site. Mostly statics. Seems plenty To keep the kids entertained.
Nice relaxing few days.

Liked The park was spotless and well equipped. The staff were very courteous. Well done guys 👏. Food was great (Cooked breakfast was well tasty 😋. Touring pitches were well spacious and next to what you needed when touring. Toilet blocks / wash up area / laundry were immaculate. Again well done to the cleaning team 👏. Overall lovely site 😁

Disliked Well.... Touring pitches have no WiFi not even a signal with your providers data. Emergency calls only I'm afraid unless you go up to the complex where the WiFi signal is very weak. And even at that I had issues even getting a call out. I asked if it would help getting the premium package which they offer at a cost. Don't know how much I didn't ask as I was told it wouldn't probably make a difference as the touring pitch section is bad for signal because of the trees. This issue is ongoing when I asked the receptionist staff about the situation. We left on the Wednesday afternoon and went somewhere close by approx 25 mins away. If you have kids or rely on your phone and your touring this is not the site for you .

Local attractions

How to pick from the 30 or so castles close to Sundrum Castle Holiday Park? For sheer magnitude plus dramatic ocean views, try Culzean Castle, which sits in 600 acres a few miles south of Ayr. Those with kids in tow should head for Kelburn Castle, with its secret forest walkways, crocodile swamp, petting zoo and play barn; keen golfers meanwhile will appreciate the course at Rowallan Castle, which has an actual 19th hole (as well as the more traditional variety). Treat yourselves to a day at the races in nearby Ayr, also great for shopping and beaches, and home to Pirate Pete’s, where you’ll find Scotland’s biggest indoor play area, as well as outdoor rides, a laser zone and a cute traditional seafront café. Other popular day trips include a trip across the water to the stunning Isle of Arran; a pilgrimage to the Burns National Heritage Park to visit the Bard’s cottage and the neighbouring museum, and a cuddle-filled day out at the Heads of Ayr Farm Park.
