  • Well-equipped holiday park among Ayr's 30+ castles
  • Indoor pool, solarium, wildlife trails and kids' clubs for ages 4-15
  • Entertainment venue, bar-restaurant and fish and chip shop
Hmmm, here’s a compelling conundrum for someone at Sundrum Castle Holiday Park: with more than 30 cracking castles tucked into the landscape around Ayr, which on earth should you visit first? And even if you stay on site, it’s decisions, decisions thanks to the packed programme of entertainment and activities at all hours of the day. Ditherers, you have been warned. Daytime choices include a splash about on the flume at the indoor pool, a relaxing session in the solarium, 10-pin bowling, a round of crazy golf, a deerstalking stroll around the wildlife trails, or a game of five-a-side or basketball. For kids, there’s a mind-boggling selection of fun sessions in the kids’ clubs for ages four to 15. As night falls, take your pick of competitions, live music, cabaret, dancing and comedy in the on-site entertainment venue. As for food, the Tam O’Shanter bar-restaurant has a comprehensive set of food and drink options including freshly brewed Costa Coffee, or you could just grab a bite from the fish and chip shop. So, if you’re after an unspoilt country setting close to fab beaches and some of Scotland’s top tourist attractions, Sundrum Castle Holiday Park may well be the spot. (Phew, at least that's one decision made…)

What customers say

Grand facilities, especially for families – the pool and playgrounds are a hit! Staff are sound, though some folk found the loos and showers could be cleaner. WiFi's a bit patchy, and the shop's pricey enough.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (no pets)

Liked The location is great for travelling in and around Ayrshire providing you drive.

Disliked Camping ground is on a slope, you pick your spot which means as it gets busier theres little space between tents and unorganised chaos. We pitched away from others only to end up with tents pretty much all around us despite being up in a corner. There is no allocated tent parking and it can get busy fast. A few residents seem to have a negative, unwelcoming stance towards campers. One old man in (105) stood and stared down myself and my teenage daughter the full time as we pitched our tent which felt intimidating given that we'd just arrived, I pointed this out to my partner who had also noticed his strange behaviour! He even made hand gestures telling us to move despite us being nowhere near his caravan where he wanted us to go was anyone's guess. At night time you have to navigate others guys lines on route to the toilets in poor lighting because people are randomly pitched everywhere. The facilities are tired, dirty and dated, falling apart. The female toilet block only has 4 stalls, and 2 showers which are shared between the touring caravans and the campers. More often than not toilets we're blocked or dirty. There is almost a cost for absolutely everything and anything on site which could severely impact young families enjoyment at such an expense. Thankfully with older kids it was never our intention to spend much time on the site itself. At night time in the clubhouse I have never seen so many security guards patrolling a site. Food and drinks are expensive for what they provide. The site doesn't seem to operate any form of restriction on noise after a certain time until the morning which unfortunately leaves you vulnerable to others with less consideration. I had also noticed that dogs mess was also a common feature within the camping ground. (None of the campers had dogs). Another issue was rubbish blowing around which only attracted more seagulls.

From the manager: Hi there,

We are very sorry to hear about your stay with us.

We're sorry to hear that the lack of mobile signal and limited Wi-Fi coverage affected your stay. We appreciate how important it is for many of our guests to be able to stay connected, whether it's to keep in touch with family or to simply browse the internet.

Mobile signal can vary across the park depending on your network provider and your accommodation's location, particularly in more wooded areas. While we do offer Wi-Fi in selected locations, we understand this wasn't sufficient for your needs, and we're sorry that this meant you were unable to enjoy your stay as planned.

We appreciate you sharing your experience, as feedback like yours helps us understand where improvements can be made. We hope you'll consider staying with us again in the future. ^SR

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Friendly staff. Pitch was clean and tidy. Instructions to pitch was clear.

Local attractions

How to pick from the 30 or so castles close to Sundrum Castle Holiday Park? For sheer magnitude plus dramatic ocean views, try Culzean Castle, which sits in 600 acres a few miles south of Ayr. Those with kids in tow should head for Kelburn Castle, with its secret forest walkways, crocodile swamp, petting zoo and play barn; keen golfers meanwhile will appreciate the course at Rowallan Castle, which has an actual 19th hole (as well as the more traditional variety). Treat yourselves to a day at the races in nearby Ayr, also great for shopping and beaches, and home to Pirate Pete’s, where you’ll find Scotland’s biggest indoor play area, as well as outdoor rides, a laser zone and a cute traditional seafront café. Other popular day trips include a trip across the water to the stunning Isle of Arran; a pilgrimage to the Burns National Heritage Park to visit the Bard’s cottage and the neighbouring museum, and a cuddle-filled day out at the Heads of Ayr Farm Park.
