Grass pitches on site
Lots of space to spread out
Peaceful grass pitches

  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Our visit to Stud Farm lasted two days and we loved it. The views across Peacehaven and the Downs are stunning and the site was very peaceful even though it was a weekend.
The facilities are adequate and very clean.
The camp site owner was on site for a large part of the day and was very friendly and helpful.
We will definitely return.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked The location of the site was great - easily walkable to the nearest town, from which you can get buses directly to Rottingdean/Brighton. Facilities were small but clean.

Disliked The first thing we were asked when we arrived was whether we would want to shower whilst on site (before even "welcome")- when we said yes (why would we not when they're available and we're here for 2 days?) it seemed like this was an inconvenience because of the water pressure. This is fine and we don't expect luxury when camping - but the attitude we were immediately met with was a bit off. When my boyfriend did then have a shower he accidentally(!) didn't lock the door properly and the site owner walked in to clean whilst he was in there. An accident, not a huge issue as these things happen and an "oops! sorry" would have been fine. Instead, the owner got irate at my boyfriend for not locking the door properly and complained about it to another guest. This was more embarrassing than her walking in! Generally we overheard the site owner moaning/complaining about guests quite a lot during our stay which made us feel uneasy. As we were leaving we also saw her going through someone's tent - I think because they were due to check out that day. Surely their tent being there tells you enough without having to go in! Generally seemed like they didn't enjoy hosting people, and if that's the case, just don't do it...

From the manager: thank you for your feedback as it is valuable to us.
after reading your comments i did question staff on site at the time of your visit.
we have three websites that serve's our campsite and not all of them state that we occasionally get low water pressure, so our member of staff was just for your concern so that you didn't get a cold shower.
the warden stated that she had said sorry when walking in on your boyfriend after not locking the door, and that it was another camper that asked if this happens regular and the warden answered sometimes. and didn't expand on this.

as for the tent, we would never ever go into someone's tent as it is their private domain.
This was actually the wardens tent, a relative had stayed for just one night and left early, didn't take it down as it was still damp in the morning, and left it for the owner which was the warden to take it down when it had dried, so i think we can safely say you was mistaken with your ongoing comments on this one.

we are sorry that you didn't get on well with this warden, and welcome any further feedback you may have.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Absolutely fantastic site, stunning views, no hook up, which I didn't need. Pitch was very spacious! Only stayed one night, would have loved to have stayed longer, didn't use the showers as we get away early for a race. The toilets were spotless!!! Just outside the site was 3 footpaths over the South Downs.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
