  • Family-run campsite between Northallerton and Thirsk, North Yorkshire
  • A 20-minute drive to the North York Moors, and 25 to Lightwater Valley
  • Well-maintained camping on a small farm; shops 10 minutes’ drive
Torn between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors? Book a pitch at Greystone Cottage Farm in the village of Maunby, and there’s no need to choose as you have easy access to both from its handy location between the market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk. This is a small campsite on all-grass pitches on a working farm, and when you’re exploring you’re likely to meet free-range chickens, curious goats and horses – especially Biscuit the (mini) Pony, likely to become a firm favourite with kids. While dogs are more than welcome, please respect the livestock and keep them under control at all times. Fantastic views stretching across the Vale of York to Sutton Bank and the chalk White Horse (first carved in 1857) are an added bonus, and there are loads of family attractions within easy striking distance. Pick up everything you need in Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) supermarkets to spark up the barbecue, or head for the local village pub, which does a good line in traditional dishes (eat in or takeaway) with a range of local cask ales, ciders and lagers. One last thing: this is wild camping with no fuss or frills, so please bring your own torches and barbecues.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The hosts were very accomadating, nothing was too much of an issue. The campsite was well looked after and my little boy made great freinds with their young son and played all day, he was very keen to introduce him and my niece to their farm animals which was great fun for them both. The grounds were very wet, due to time of year, however they explained this befor arrival and with a quick phone call we were towed straight off the campsite with no issues! We will return.

Liked: The warm welcome, informative and helpful. The scenery is beautiful even though the weather was awful, there is clearly a lot more to see and discover. We definitely plan to go back in the spring to see the farm flourish as the season gets started. Facilities were great too, very clean and practical. Our dogs were also welcomed, nothing was too much bother, really lovely vibe about the place. I can see the farm being a regular place for us to visit.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Lovely secluded site on a working farm with lots of nice walks on the doorstep. Host super friendly and accommodating. We had some horrendous weather pre my trip and the owners arranged to have the van and car on harder ground and ran electrics to me etc. All in all lovely relaxing stay and would certainly recommend.

Liked: Toilets cleaned and rubbish cleared daily. Clear and concise instructions given before arrival. Very pleasant site.

Disliked: Unfortunately, a local Cockerell crows even before dawn but this is not something that can be the fault of the sites owner
