Family-friendly May bank holiday getaways from Pitchup.com

Apr 14 2014 Posted by Samantha Marsh

The May bank holiday is just around the corner and that means having to keep the kids entertained while school’s out.

Fortunately for parents, outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com has plenty of suggestions for places to stay – each promising more than enough to keep youngsters of all ages amused.

Here are some suggestions for places to stay that still have availability for May 24-31. For more ideas, search for family friendly options on the Pitchup.com site.

Heathside Caravans, Suffolk

Four miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline, this small and pretty site has its own nature trail, lake and kids’ play area. Hire bikes, go horse riding, visit Africa Alive! – the African animal adventure park at Lowestoft - or see the RSPB reserve at Minsmere nearby. Even better, prices are fixed throughout the year, so a few nights away in one of the site’s deluxe pods (with wifi) needn’t cost a fortune just because it’s the peak half-term holidays.

Price: A camping pod costs £60 per night, for four people.

Chy Carne Holiday Park, Cornwall

Chy Carne Holiday Park is relaxed, family oriented, dog friendly and just a 10-minute walk to the clean and safe Kennack Sands beach, where youngsters will have fun spotting a basking shark or taking scenic walks on the coastal path. Helston, Falmouth, St Austell and the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek are all within easy reach and kids can try their hand at sailing, surfing or fishing. On site, there’s a pirate play ship, outdoor games area, barbecue and pizzeria. The static holiday homes have all been recently refurbished.

Price: A three-bedroom holiday home costs £349.50 per week or for a cheaper stay pitch up a tent, tourer or caravan on one of the spacious grass pitches for only £129.50 per week.

Linnhe Lochside Holidays, Scotland

This holiday park is five miles from Fort William and has its own private beach with free fishing and boat launch. Toddlers have their own playroom and there are adventure playgrounds for the bigger folk and wifi access. Fort William itself has all sorts of sporty options on offer, including fishing, whitewater rafting and quad biking. Also nearby is the Nevis Range Mountain Centre, with high wires and the country’s only mountain gondola. There are boat trips to Seal Island plus seal spotting and birdwatching trips available to several other nearby islands including Skye, Craigleith and Colonsay. Loch Ness is easily reachable for a day trip. Nearer is Loch Morar, where Nessie’s cousin Morag is rumoured to live. Add a bit of history at the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore and the West Highlands Museum in Fort William for a fun and educational week away.

Price: A two-bed loch view holiday home costs £500 for one week or stay on a grass pitch for tents, tourers and motorhomes is just £156.45 per week.

Camping Bellevue, Brittany, France

Camping Bellevue has pitches and holiday homes that are ideally situated just 2km from the beach at Les Sables d'Or and Cap Frehél. On site there’s a heated kids’ paddling pool with a mini slide and fountain, and a heated swimming pool with keep-fit/sports sessions such as aqua-gym and water ball games. Organised sports tournaments, evening entertainment, kids’ club and wifi are all included in the price. There’s also an on-site bar, shop and creperie. Nearby there’s a sailing school, watersports centre and diving school, while it’s also possible to go sand yachting, kitesurfing, waterskiing and fishing. The Medieval cities of Dinan and Moncontour are close by and boat trips to the islands of Bréhat, Jersey and Guernsey can all be booked.

Price: A two-bed holiday home for four costs £278.67 for a week, with tent pitches costing £146.02 per week.

Pitchup.com currently has 594 sites offering availability for May half term with choices spread across the UK, Ireland and France. Many have fewer than ten spaces available so early booking is highly recommended.
