Hunstanton Camping and Glamping: Gorgeous sunsets colouring the campsite in a beautiful orange

General

  • Wildlife haven among open fields: walk to the beach in five minutes
  • Basic and peaceful site just behind the coast path
  • Barbecues and campfires both allowed: shop a minute's walk away

The splendid beach near Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is the only eastern beach in Britain facing west. (Do keep up: the setting is in East Anglia, thus east, but the beach is Heacham, facing west.)

And what does this mean apart from just the opportunity to bamboozle the kids? Spectacular sunrises and sunsets, that's what, as well as a setting just five minutes from these dog-friendly sands and with easy access to the beaches, birdwatching, boating and rambles of the Wash and west Norfolk's coast.

Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is a few minutes' drive from Heacham (or 10 minutes via the Coasthopper bus), in a peaceful wildlife haven surrounded by open fields. It's three miles from here to Snettisham, five to Hunstanton and 10 miles to Thornham, all with dog-friendly beaches and walks aplenty, or you could feel regal for the day with a trip to Sandringham – and its woodland walking paths – within 15 minutes' drive.

The site has a good selection of amenities including three toilet cubicles (separate ladies' and gents'), two unisex showers and a washroom space, as well as a washing-up area and a freshwater tap/brown water and chemical waste disposal point for guests' use. Charging facilities are available for a small extra charge. Please note there are farm tracks on site (not paved roads) and no play area, although the beach is half a mile away.

Barbecues and campfires are both allowed; a local shop a minute's walk away has most supplies you should need.

The site was exactly as described, basic and quiet. The facilities were good (nice hot showers).
The beach is minutes away. We walked to Hunstanton along the beach which we did in about 45 minutes.
Not everywhere to eat locally is open in the evening off season, but we had a lovely meal in the West Norfolk pub about 15 minutes walk away near North Beach.

Very quiet and easy to find. Friendly owner. Easy access to beaches.

    Disliked:

Despite hoping for hot water in the sinks, didn't find any. Daren't risk the shower. Whole site in need of a spruce up, been to much better for same price per night.

From the manager...

Thank you Dee for your review, we are pleased that you found us easily and that you enjoyed our great proximity to the beach, just a 2-minute stroll away. We have a great back-to-basic campsite in an ideal location on the Norfolk Coast, there is no hot water hooked up to the washing-up sinks, but there are plenty of buckets for you to take hot water from the showers to wash up. We have a number of inside and outside showers, all are hot with no time limit on the water, everyone hates the pushy button showers. Such a shame that you won't be returning here to stay with us on the Norfolk COast :)

The location was lovely and quiet and very close to the beach, as well as access to good walking and village pub and chippy.
Facilities although basic were clean and functional.
Welcome was very friendly and we had almost the run of the place, and enjoyed watching the Chickens on site doing a tour of the campsite!
    Showers were lovely and hot.
Pitch was nice and flat, electric hookup easy to connect to.
    Lovely sunset.

    Disliked:

There is only 1 male and 1 female indoor shower at the time of our visit. It would have been nice to have had a raised area to store shoes away from shower spray. It could have also benefited from a tray or in-shower basket to store shampoo etc.
Would have been easier to have had numbers on pitches as it wasn't completely clear what the pitch size was as it wasn't marked out.

Thank you Lucy for your great review of Hunstanton Camping and Glamping, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your time here with us by the beach. Directions

The site is behind the sea defences: watch out as you head towards the sea. The site is the last farm building on the left-hand side of the road.

From the A149 at King's Lynn, turn left towards Heacham South Beach (Lamsey Lane). Then, turn left again towards the beach and turn left into the campsite when you can see the sea in front of you (roughly 1000 yards before the beach).

Local attractions

Twitchers rejoice, for there's birdwatching galore around here. Make for the RSPB reserve in Snettisham for flocks of birds around the Wash, or for RSPB Titchwell Marsh (20 minutes) to see avocets, marsh harriers and pink-footed geese around its marshlands, reedbeds and freshwater lagoons. Titchwell has a wide sandy beach to investigate too, where scenery seekers can snap far-reaching views across the Wash.

Boating and watersports are easily accessed just down the coast at Hunstanton. The town's also home to the rides of Rainbow Park fairground, and the Sea Life Sanctuary next door where you and curious kids can see seals, penguins, otters and other watery species.

Other recommended options include Norfolk Lavender, five minutes' drive away at Caley Mill, and the 12th-century ruins of Castle Rising (15 minutes), one of the biggest and best preserved keeps in England.
