Hunstanton Camping and Glamping: An overview of our campsite where you can see how close we are to the beach!

General

  • Wildlife haven among open fields: walk to the beach in five minutes
  • Basic and peaceful site just behind the coast path
  • Barbecues and campfires both allowed: shop a minute's walk away

The splendid beach near Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is the only eastern beach in Britain facing west. (Do keep up: the setting is in East Anglia, thus east, but the beach is Heacham, facing west.)

And what does this mean apart from just the opportunity to bamboozle the kids? Spectacular sunrises and sunsets, that's what, as well as a setting just five minutes from these dog-friendly sands and with easy access to the beaches, birdwatching, boating and rambles of the Wash and west Norfolk's coast.

Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is a few minutes' drive from Heacham (or 10 minutes via the Coasthopper bus), in a peaceful wildlife haven surrounded by open fields. It's three miles from here to Snettisham, five to Hunstanton and 10 miles to Thornham, all with dog-friendly beaches and walks aplenty, or you could feel regal for the day with a trip to Sandringham – and its woodland walking paths – within 15 minutes' drive.

The site has a good selection of amenities including six ladies' and six gents' toilets, four unisex showers and a washroom space, as well as a washing-up area and a freshwater tap/brown water and chemical waste disposal point for guests' use. Charging facilities are available for a small extra charge. Please note there are farm tracks on site (not paved roads) and no play area, although the beach is half a mile away.

Barbecues, campfires and dogs are all allowed; a well-stocked local shop a minute's walk away has most supplies you should need.

Overpriced and unacceptable quality09/20/2021

We booked the site based upon the price and expected a beautiful manicured facility with excellent services. How wrong could we have been.

The site was disorganised and messy and resembled an unfinished project that had not been planned in any serious manner. The pitches were small, the toilets dirty, the showers unimaginable and the cost was unprecedented. To pay £140 for two nights and get basically rough camping was rather a shock. There was even a separate charge, included in the £140, of £20 for electricity. My home electricity for a large detached home with three adults, two electric cars and cooking, only works out at £6 per day so £10 for a motorhome which cooks on gas is laughable.

We also had to wait to get onto the site till 5pm as anything earlier would have cost another £10. We have never encountered this before and have always been used to arriving between 12 and 2. However an extra three hours on this site was something to miss. Further on arrival we were initially told we didn’t book electricity and the mistake was blamed on the administrator. This was a feeble excuse as it was clearly shown on our booking record and the administrator is also the owner.

On Saturday the ladies toilets were only cleaned once and were still not revisited for at least 26 hours with the waste bin therefore overflowing. One of the toilets also was permanently locked so only one in use. Both the Ladies and the Gents looked like they had been constructed in a rush with reclaimed materials as nothing was consistent or matching. Once again for £70 a night this is nothing more than a total sham. The site also advertises WiFi but you have to firstly sign up to Facebook and after that it is very weak and intermittent, if gold was a good service this would have qualified as Lead.

The site states it is dog friendly but we had to keep our dogs in the van at all times as there are chickens roaming freely. Not sensible as most dogs will want to chase poultry given half a chance. Also the rubble used for the paths and roadways has a significant amount of broken glass which once again demonstrates that the site was built on cheap materials and long term value or safety were not a consideration.

Overall at very very best this is a One star site for quality but it charges like a Five star facility. This is a site to miss and one which we will not recommend or ever return to. Parking in a lay-by would be more attractive

From the manager...

Thank you timothy for your review, we are sad to hear you did not enjoy your stay here with us on the Norfolk Coast. Thank you also for your photos and for letting people know that we have firepits available for use by our campers, we also provide brick for people to have off ground BBQs. We are undergoing some maintenance, as you can imagine we are trying to get this done asap before the winter sets in. We are sorry to hear that you won't be returning, we would have loved to host you again here by the beach in Heacham :)

From the manager...

Thank you Dave for your review, we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay here with us on the Norfolk Coast. We offer a fantastic little campsite in the heart of North Norfolk, just a 3-minute walk from the vast open sands of Heacham South beach. We have a great link to Hunstanton and offer back to basic camping in a rural location with epic views. Our guests always mention how great our staff are, stating that they are friendly and helpful, we are sorry on this occasion you felt that communication was lacking, we send lots of texts and emails to make sure that your booking is everything you want it to be, that you get directions to us on the day and to see feedback after your visit :)

    Disliked:

My experience here unfortunately was not a good one, first of all the price £350 for a bank holiday weekend stay is hotel money. Really over priced for the very poor standard of the site.

Upon arrival we met with the owner of the site and was shown to our pitches, the entrance to the touring site is extremely tight especially when towing a twin axel tourer. There was wood scattered all over the site and bricks bizarrely to mark out where the caravans and motor homes where to park. The caravans where crammed on the site back to back leaving no space for the children to play. Electrics tripped out twice and we was without power for a night ( owner blamed it on our neighbours motor home)

The whole place was like a building site everything half finished, only two showers on site and they were filthy. Showers would not regulate temperature at all so either got scolded or you was freezing cold. We had two dogs with us and the owner told my wife off because they were not on a lead and he had free range chickens roaming around the site ( not a great idea when you have a site that welcomes dogs 🙄). The make shift road that you drive on to get to your pitch is the cheapest reclaimed rubble you could buy and is full of glass! Yes glass and you can bring your dogs!

We found the owner to be very rude, when we originally booked we reviewed our t’s and c’s and had a few questions. We rang the site and spoke with the owner who was very abrupt, he told us he couldent answer our questions and to email “admin”. We later found out the man we spoke to was not only the owner he was also the admin the receptionist the manager the maintenance man and every other title very strange setup.

All in all I was left feeling very short changed by the whole ordeal, would I return definitely NOT!

From the manager...

Thank you Alex for your review, we are sorry that you did not find our campsite on the Norfolk Coast to your liking. We have a small campsite so we mark out the pitches to be able to fit everyone in on such a busy weekend such as the August Bank Holiday, everyone wanted a campsite by the beach! Our guests often comment on how nice it is that everyone is together and the site has a festival feel at busier times. Such a shame that you wouldn't return, we would have looked forward to having you stay again :)

When we first saw the site we thought it looked a bit run down but it was really that the site was work in progress , unfinished decor and signs missing off showers so you knew what doors to go into , I think it will be a great site once it is all finished to a good standard.

From the manager...

Thank you Debrorah for your great review, we are doing a lot of improvements to our campsite, as you can appreciate this has to be done while we have guests staying, we do of course keep the disruption to a minimum and are not sure why people would want to spend time looking at that when we have such vast wonderful views out over the countryside and Norfolk marshes! Our facilities are very good and better than most along the coast and of course we have the added bonus of the beach being so close, we very much hope that you visit us again here on the Norfolk Coast :)

Twitchers rejoice, for there's birdwatching galore around here. Make for the RSPB reserve in Snettisham for flocks of birds around the Wash, or for RSPB Titchwell Marsh (20 minutes) to see avocets, marsh harriers and pink-footed geese around its marshlands, reedbeds and freshwater lagoons. Other recommended options include Norfolk Lavender, five minutes' drive away at Caley Mill, and the 12th-century ruins of Castle Rising (15 minutes), one of the biggest and best preserved keeps in England.
