  • Wildlife haven in west Norfolk: walk to the beach in two minutes
  • Basic and peaceful site next to the Norfollk Coast Path
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; shop and pub a few minute's walk away
The splendid beach near Hunstanton Camping and Glamping (dog-friendly Heacham beach, two minutes' walk away) is the only east-coast beach in Britain facing west. This means that guests here are often treated to the sight of a spectacular sunset over the sea – a real rarity for Norfolk. As well being a romantic sunset spot, this location is also a very enticing one for watersports enthusiasts, hikers and families – plus dog owners, who are welcome to bring their pet along for a holiday and a ramble along the Norfolk coast. Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is on the edge of the village of Heacham, in a peaceful wildlife haven surrounded by open fields. It's three miles from here to Snettisham, five to Hunstanton and 10 miles to Thornham, all with dog-friendly beaches and walks aplenty, or you could feel regal for the day with a trip to Sandringham – and its woodland walking paths – within 15 minutes' drive. The site has a good selection of amenities including toilets (ladies', gents' and unisex facilities), four indoor unisex showers and a number of outdoor showers. Grey waste water disposal and chemical disposal are available for touring guests, and plug sockets in washrooms mean you can charge phones or use hairdryers easily enough. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed; a local shop a minute's walk away has most supplies you should need. There's also a pub a few minutes' walk away.

What customers say

Great spot near the beach, with helpful staff and a peaceful vibe. Facilities are basic but functional, though some say showers/toilets need an update. Dog-friendly with campfires. A solid, if a bit rustic, base for the Norfolk coast.

Power optional grass campervan site

Liked There are some genuinely lovely things about Hunstanton Glamping and Camping, and it’s a real shame that the condition of the site lets what could be a fantastic campsite down so badly.

What we liked

The location is excellent. You’re very close to the beach and within easy reach of Hunstanton, while everyday amenities such as Tesco and the new Lidl are also conveniently nearby.

For us, one of the biggest positives was the access to the surrounding countryside and nature reserve. There are plenty of footpaths straight from the area and lots of wildlife. During our stay we saw hares and deer, and the relatively open surroundings also give you a fantastic view of the night sky. If you enjoy walking, wildlife and being outdoors, the setting itself is beautiful

Disliked Yes — with all of that, I’d make the review quite strong, but keep it factual so it carries more weight and doesn’t just read as an angry rant.

Unfortunately, our experience at Hunstanton Glamping and Camping was extremely disappointing.

The site describes itself as “rustic”, but there is a big difference between rustic and neglected. There is old equipment, rubbish, bags and general clutter left around the site, and in places it honestly feels more like a junk yard than a campsite. There are weeds and nettles growing everywhere and very little evidence of any regular maintenance or attention to detail.

The biggest issue, however, is the cleanliness of the facilities. The showers were absolutely disgusting — old, dirty, falling apart and seemingly not cleaned regularly. The toilets were even worse. We found them filthy, with faeces and urine left around the toilets and seats. Of the three women’s toilets, only two were working during our stay, and only one sink appeared to be working properly. Even then, the water pressure was barely adequate.

The washing-up facilities weren’t much better. There was no hot water for washing dishes, the sinks themselves were filthy, and the whole area looked like it desperately needed a proper deep clean and refurbishment.

Waste management also appears to be a serious problem. Bins were full to the brim, rubbish bags were left around the site, and we even found bags of dog mess left on camping pitches that hadn’t been collected. During our stay we also saw rats around the site and dead moles.

We’re perfectly happy with basic, rustic camping and don’t expect luxury facilities. But basic does not have to mean dirty, poorly maintained or unhygienic.

In our opinion, this site needs significant investment and a complete overhaul. The facilities need refurbishing, the grounds need properly clearing and maintaining, and there needs to be a much more robust cleaning and waste-management regime.

It’s a real shame because a genuinely rustic campsite can be a lovely experience, but based on what we experienced, we couldn’t recommend staying here in its current condition.

Power optional grass campervan site

Liked Closeness to the beach and village. Fires and BBQS are allowed.

Disliked The cleanliness of the toilets and wash areas was very poor. The toilets constantly stank of urine and the showers are not cleaned regularly. It's a shame as this could be a really nice campsite with just some more maintenance and regular correct cleaning methods.

Power optional grass campervan site (no awning)

Liked Er, don't rush me. I suppose it didn't rain, 'cos then I imagine the smell would only add to the problems. It smelled pretty bad as it was. The electric hook up worked, but was over priced. Then again, the incompetent staff wouldn't know if you'd paid for electric or not. I'd like to say the location, but the noise from the adjacent holiday camp and the scumbags on the beach after hours mean that it would only be worth visiting when no one else is around.

Disliked Pretty much everything. Amongst other things: the overflowing bins. The stinking toilet block. The rats. The staff. The mess. The price. The lies. the incompetence. I also dislike the artificial intelligence written response that will follow this review going on about 'we'll try harder' and 'we'll take your comments on board'. No you won't - you're a bunch of morons who couldn't write your own name with a stick, let alone a coherent response. You know that some idiots won't read the reviews and book it anyway. You're not interested in the return visitors as you know you won't get any so you over charge the fools you resort to using you. I implore anyone reading this to sleep in a layby or book into a Premier Inn. Yes, I am one of the idiots who stayed here - but I'm blessed not in knowing that I'll never stay anywhere near this bad again. I stayed because I was desperate and I now truly know what desperate feels like. Imagine me writing this if artificial intelligence wouldn't screen it off the website because of the swearing. You'd learn a few choice phrases then. Seriously, give not only this site a miss but also don't go within a mile of it. If you do and then read the reviews, you have my sympathy and I can only apologise that I didn't have the time or patience to stand at the gate any turn you away.

From the A149 at King's Lynn, turn left towards Heacham South Beach (Lamsey Lane). Local attractions

Nature fans rejoice, for there's birdwatching galore around here. Make for the RSPB reserve in Snettisham for flocks of birds around the Wash, or for RSPB Titchwell Marsh (20 minutes' drive) to see avocets, marsh harriers and pink-footed geese around its marshlands, reedbeds and freshwater lagoons. Titchwell has a wide sandy beach to investigate too, where scenery seekers can snap far-reaching views across the Wash. Boating and watersports are easily accessed just down the coast at Hunstanton. The town's also home to the rides of Rainbow Park fairground, and the Sea Life Sanctuary next door where you and curious kids can see seals, penguins, otters and other watery species. Other recommended options include Norfolk Lavender, five minutes' drive away at Caley Mill, and the 12th-century ruins of Castle Rising (15 minutes), one of the biggest and best preserved keeps in England.
