The Peacemaker Ranch

- Campsite on a ranch with spectacular mountain scenery in southern Utah
- Water Canyon Trailhead 15 minutes’ drive; Zion National Park an hour
- Hiking, ATV and horse riding trails direct from the off-grid pitches
Fancy the chance to really, really get away from modern life? Hidden in Apple Valley among the incredible mountains of southern Utah, The Peacemaker Ranch is a working cattle ranch with bison, llamas, horses and cows, and provides a fantastic setting for a romantic get-away à deux, an active break with pals or a chilled family holiday.
What you can expect: stunning sandstone landscapes of canyons, buttes and mesas shaped by wind and water over millions of years. Explosive sunsets and amazing starlight views on clear, cloudless evenings. Spectacular hiking, ATV and riding trails right outside your accommodation, as well as a free outdoor gun range.
Facilities-wise, you have use of bathrooms with walk-in showers in the Barn Venue, picnic tables, outdoor barbecues (free firewood is available) and drinking water. Everything is off grid and the wifi is limited, so you may even get your kids to abandon their devices and appreciate the breathtaking views.

Local attractions
The deep gorges and red sandstone rock formations of Zion National Park (about an hour’s drive) have a myriad of hiking, cycling and horse riding trails through flat-bottomed, steep-sided gorges. If you’re after more high-octane activity, take a boat trip down Virgin River, try canyoning or climbing sheer cliffs and pinnacles.
If you’d rather hang out closer to home base, it’s only 15 minutes’ drive to Water Canyon Trailhead at Hildale, where you can follow a track along the river to a dramatic tumbling waterfall. Another local hiking option is the Amphitheater Trail (half an hour), which – as its name may suggest – leads to a vast natural amphitheatre along Short Creek; this is a level walk and one that kids can attempt easily.
Other family-friendly attractions include Warner Valley Dinosaur Track Site (an hour), a heritage site peppered with ancient prints of giant, lizard-like dinosaurs. Budding palaeontologists can read up all about southern Utah’s prehistoric sites in the St George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm (50 minutes).
