Set in a peaceful valley in the Western Maine Mountains, Lone Mountain Riverfront Campground is a primitive camping experience with a spectacular location in untamed wilderness country, showcasing the best of Maine’s considerable natural beauty.
Whether you are camping solo, with your dog, your whole family or a group of friends, you’re very welcome at Lone Mountain. The spacious wooded campground has a variety of pitches and spotless facilities, namely a bathhouse with hot showers and flushing toilets, drinking water refill and recharge docks for your devices.
Kids have open space to run and play, plus the slow-moving and sandy-bottomed Ellis River in which to splash around, swim or lie back on lazy tubes to drift downstream at a leisurely pace.
ATV riders have direct access to a large ATV trail network, and dedicated equestrian trails run by the property as well. Other ways to spend your days include fishing for trout in the river, kayaking or joining the kids for a swim. You could also cycle to Andover (five minutes by bike) or hike around the campground before spending peaceful evenings by the campfire looking up at the stars in the clear skies above.

Local attractions
Keen to get out in the Western Maine Mountains? Head to Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve (10 minutes’ drive) for a day on hiking trails with pine forest and summit views, plus the chance to spot moose and bald eagles. For more adventurous souls, the spectacular and fabled Appalachian Trail runs through the fringes of the local town Andover (five minutes).
Keep the kids entertained with outdoor activities – disc golf, climbing walls and daredevil zipwires – in the alpine Sunday River Mountain Park (25 minutes), where you can also take year-round chairlift rides up North Peak for views and walking. Close by is another mountain hotspot: Bethel (half an hour) is popular for summer kayaking and whitewater rafting as well as challenging and steep bike trails.
Bethel also has a couple of spots for occasional bad-weather days. Learn about the geology of the mountains at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, where pieces of meteorite, striking coloured quartz and precious gems are on display, or take the kids to see a film at The Gem Theater.
