  • Clothing-optional site 50 minutes’ drive from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
  • Wapsipinicon State Park 25 minutes’ drive; Maquoketa Caves 40 minutes
  • Pitches in woodland; forest walks, kayaking and fishing available
Set in 15 acres of woodland edging the Wapsipinicon River, Jungletown Ridge is 15 minutes’ drive from the small town of Oxford Junction in Iowa, and just the spot for anyone seeking relaxation in nature. At the site, there are trails to wander, wildlife to see, river waters to fish and forest walks to enjoy – and of course, clothing is optional throughout the property. Each with firepits, picnic tables and access to alfresco showers, the pitches are all totally private, tucked away under trees or in quiet riverside corners far from city din and light pollution. When conditions are right, there are spectacular sunrises and sunsets, as well as a gazillion stars in the night sky. By day, make time to lie in a hammock and read a good book, have a float down the river by kayak or just soak up the sun. Other options include practising yoga in the woods, or finding a spot to meditate. Forget the news, forget work, forget urban life and just live in the moment. Your hosts are usually about if you need them, but otherwise, you’re largely left alone to wander through your day exactly as you wish.

Local attractions

Take your pick of nature reserves to visit: Wapsipinicon State Park (25 minutes’ drive) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its stone arch bridge, lodge and shelters were built by prisoners from Anamosa State Penitentiary. It’s also the place for forest and lakeside walks, when you might spot eagles circling above you. In Maquoketa Caves State Park (40 minutes), you can follow hiking trails to its numerous caves formed by glaciation (take a torch to explore their low-level interiors) and a six-mile trail that wends through lush woodland. The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site (50 minutes) commemorates the life of Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States; you can visit the cottage where he was born, a blacksmith’s shop, his impressive marble tomb, and the Presidential Library. On a more frivolous note, if your trip coincides with the last week of July, you can catch concerts and fairground attractions at the Great Jones County Fair (half an hour).
