The site is on a 20-acre, secure and family‑run working farm with landscaped gardens and a shaded orchard – and it’s also just 25 minutes’ drive from Kibale Forest National Park – the top spot for chimpanzee trekking in Western Uganda. You can get back to nature straight from the site too; right beyond the property is an area of natural forest where budding naturalists and explorers can discover a world of wildlife and birdsong. In the evening, you can cosy up around the communal firepits for family chats about your day’s adventures, storytelling and stargazing on cloudless nights. Local attractions

Kibale Forest National Park (25 minutes’ drive) stands 1,590 metres above sea level and is home to 13 species of endangered primates. If you’d like the rare chance to see chimpanzees in their natural environment, you can book safaris led by expert guides that take you deep into the tropical forest. Other animals often spotted within the national park include lions, leopards and elephants. The Amabere Caves (an hour), their bizarre limestone formations and tumbling waterfalls are another unmissable sight in the park. Nearby, you can walk around the crater lakes of Kigere (50 minutes) and Bbarama (an hour). To discover one of the region’s manmade wonders and learn about local history, head for New Tooro Kingdom Palace, the circular, pink residence of King Oyo; you can’t go inside but guides take visitors on tours of the gardens and explain the significance of the property to the Tooro people. It sits on a hilltop overlooking Fort Portal, where the Tooro Botanical Gardens (45 minutes) are dedicated to conserving and planting endemic flora.
