If you like the thought of peaceful surroundings on the edge of a forest, with vast open views across fields, then you’re in the right place at Ladugården, 10 minutes’ rural drive from Mellerud and Lake Vänern in Västra Götaland. The south-facing accommodation (spot on for catching all the sun) is in a small and cosy wooden cabin crafted by the owners from upcycled, salvaged and local building supplies. With its warm, welcoming décor and traditional Swedish-style furnishings, this cute little hideaway is a great spot for couples (and their dogs, of course) seeking to get far away from everyday bustle. Heated by a woodburner, it contains a double bed, sofa, foldable table with chairs, and all essentials in the kitchen for a carefree stay. Moving outside, there’s a picnic table, seating and a barbecue on the deck, which looks over the gorgeous countryside – keep an eye on your surroundings and you may see deer wandering through the fields. Close by is another wooden cabin with a modern, accessible bathroom and a laundry room with a sink for washing up. There’s a convenience store five minutes’ drive away, and Mellerud has a small mall and several restaurants. You can always ask the owners for sightseeing advice – and they’ll also tell you when and where to find the best local ‘loppis’ (flea markets).

Liked De ontvangst was hartelijk, het was ontzettend rustig. Leuk om te zien hoe Nederlandse ondernemers het vergaat in zweden en hoe ze daar alles oppakken.

Liked Where do I start Simone and her husband were two of the most friendly and helpful people I have ever met running a camp site. Yes we was there first customers but nothing was too much trouble, so much so we are planning on visiting them again on our return trip if possible.

Disliked The worst thing I can say is that it’s not the easiest to find but google did us fine. As I said we was the first customers and the signs for the camp weren’t out yet.

As well as numerous hikes directly from the cabin, spectacular Vänern (10 minutes’ drive) is the biggest lake in Sweden, surrounded by nature walks and cycling trails. Chances are that you might prefer to flop on the lakeside beaches; there are dog-friendly sandy options at Bråna and Näs Sannar (both also 10 minutes). Historic local landmarks to investigate include the white-painted wooden Hjortens Udde Lighthouse (20 minutes), founded in 1852, and the semi-ruined Håverud Aqueduct (25 minutes) on Dalsland Canal. If you fancy a day trip over the border into Norway, you can tour the sprawling 17th-century Fredriksten Fortress (an hour and a half) – stop by to admire dramatic Älgafallet Waterfall (an hour and 15 minutes) on the way.
