Picking the best beach in Galicia is no easy task – this is a stiff competition indeed, with a long list of gorgeous places to choose from. That said, the coast around Barreiros is a very strong contender, with a fabulous eight kilometres of sandy beach for visitors to play with. Sound good? It gets even better when you stay at Camping A Gaivota – this splendid site is right on the Galicia coast, with direct access to both the beach and the coast path that runs all the way along to the popular As Catedrais beach. That makes this site a fantastic base for chilled beach stays and active holidays alike – you’ll be able to get out onto the coast path for a long walk, hit the waves for a day of surfing or swimming, go fishing or play games on the beach. There are lots of great hiking, cycling and horse riding trails a little way inland as well, so you’ll be able to mix up coast and countryside time easily enough. Culture, too, as the site owners provide lots of handy info to help guests delve into local history and heritage. Some of that culture is right there on site, in fact, as this place was designed and built by the painter Celso Dourado. The characterful architecture (with lots of stone, wood and glass) is backed up by a good collection of guest facilities including a shop, a café, a launderette, a playground and a barbecue area (pick up supplies in Foz or Ribadeo, both 15 minutes’ drive away).

Liked Compact and efficient, tidy, well equipped site, good hot showers and facilities. Great restaurant and bar area. Useful little shop. Good WiFi. Lovely people running it.

Local attractions

The beach by the site may well occupy much of your time, but it’s well worth exploring some of the other hotspots along the coast. A great place to start is As Catedrais beach, with its monumental stone arch – it’s a 10-minute drive away, but even better reached with an hour-long walk along the coast path. This stretch of coast has some great surfing – and there are a couple of surf schools five minutes’ walk from the site for those who need a little tuition. Foz (15 minutes’ drive) has kayaking and other watersports, and there’s horse riding half an hour away at Cabaliño de pao. Something a little slower-paced? Book ahead to take a tour of the intriguing Pazo de San Isidro (25 minutes), or go for a stroll through Espazo Caritel (15 minutes), a botanic garden full of sculpture and plants. Mondoñedo (25 minutes) is a lovely town to wander around, with an attractive historic centre, and you can also take a day trip to the UNESCO-listed city of Lugo (an hour and 15 minutes).
