Crafting yourself a nice little outdoorsy break in Catalonia? Over at Camping Oliana, just outside of the Serra d'Aubenç i Roc de Cogul national park, outdoorsy breaks are very much on the menu. The peaceful dog-friendly base is surrounded by mountains and rivers, so hiking, kayaking, climbing, fishing, canyoning and road or mountain biking are easily accessible. The site has a cosy and familiar feeling, so you’ll have a splendid base to return to after you’ve torn up the tracks, trekked the slopes or splashed your way downstream. The national park is part of the Aubence mountain range and there are wild landscapes all around, including rugged cliffs that guests can see from the site itself. If you’re after a family-friendly break too, you’re in the right place. Camping Oliana specialises in healthy, active and peaceful activities for kids, and it often organises themed parties and other special activities. The main building houses all the facilities, including bathrooms, showers, a washing machine, an ironing board, a children's bathtub and a baby changing table. Between mountain ranges and the Espluvins gorge (a hot hiking and climbing destination, five minutes’ drive away), the site is in the south of the Alt Urgell region, known for its slopes and outdoor sports. To the west, El Segre river is 10 minutes’ walk from the site. To the east is the Solsonès region (half an hour’s drive), to the north is Coll de Nargó (10 minutes), to the west is Peramola (10 minutes) and to the south is Bassella (five minutes). If you feel like eating out, there are restaurants and bars in and around Oliana, within 15 minutes’ walk of the site.

Local attractions

Here to hike? There are very rewarding views from the hilltop ruins of Castell d'Aguilar de Bassella (10 minutes’ drive) and the hilltop church Mare de Déu de Castell-Llebre (15 minutes). Roca del Corb (half an hour) is a very popular trekking and climbing stretch up in the slopes too. If you fancy venturing further away, there are wild swimming pools to bathe in after a hike around Espai Natural del Forat de Bulí (55 minutes). To the south, the ancient city of Lleida (an hour and 10 minutes) has plenty of attractions for a day of sightseeing, from a hilltop fortress with a Gothic-Romanesque cathedral and the Castle of Gardeny to an old town and lively shopping streets. In Coll de Nargó (10 minutes), spend a lazier day picking a terrace to unwind on while taking in the views of the reservoir.
