  • Shaded, level pitches five minutes’ drive from Valencia de Don Juan
  • León and Monasterio de Santa María de Sandoval 35 minutes’ drive
  • Dogs welcome; pool, multi-sports field and tennis court; restaurant
The website announces proudly that Camping Pico Verde was created by a camping enthusiast. That must be the reason why this secure site on the outskirts of the northern Spanish town of Valencia de Don Juan (five minutes’ drive along the VCL-621 road) ticks so many boxes. First of all: families are welcome here (and well-behaved family dogs, too). There’s a playground with a miniature adventure course (climbing and crawling structures) and a TV room to keep the kids busy (and, one would hope, happy), plus an outdoor pool for grown-ups, who can lounge here with a cerveza and a plate of tapas from the restaurant. Keen to gather the whole family around one activity? On site, you can organise a ping-pong or tennis tournament, or utilise the multi-purpose sports court; if you prefer to embark on a family exploration of the local area, the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Esla departs from Valencia de Don Juan and loosely follows the course of the river Esla, snaking past fields of sunflowers and poplar groves all the way to the town of Castrofuerte. From there, you can continue a little further south-west to a birdwatching area with elevated hides for a picnic in the shade of tall trees. Speaking of shade, pitches at Pico Verde are shaded, level and grassy, with privacy-giving hedges; a wooded area (a top spot for dog walks) skirts the stream running along the southern border of the site. In addition to a toilet block with accessible facilities, there’s free hot water and washing machines.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked The fact that they refunded us when we decided to leave

Disliked Electricity tripping so many times it messed up our boiler. Plus it went off in the night so the fridge was flashing we couldn’t reset because they had pad locked up all the electrics!!! They claim the children on the site mess with the trip switches!

The horrendous flies so bad we had to eat indoors and it was very hot.

They did not understand about grey water and suggested we pour grey elevated down the drain with the fresh water Tao. Not hygienic!

The chemical waste was ancient and not good.

The shower block was clean but extremely dated.

I have to say this is probably the worst camp site we have ever stayed at in the whole of Europe.

Perfecto para pasar unos días en familia

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Relatively flat pitches delineated by hedges, plenty of shade from the trees, easy access from the main A66 route.

Disliked Inferior facilities that appear to have been built during World War II. The on-site cafe is not great. Limited reception. Needs some money spent. This could be a wonderful site but probably resting on its laurels.
No toilet seats in the loos. Maybe they could make extra revenue by renting them out? My wife would not use the showers.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked The pitches are segregated by hedges approx 1.2 metres high there is a choice of shaded pitches and open pitches. Toilets and showers are immaculately clean plumbing is dated but hot water is plentiful. There is a small well
Kept swimming pool on site.
Staff are very helpful they even supplied a baguette from the kitchen at a very low price when we enquired about bread . Great location to village pool complex and sports facilities including zip line climbing complex. The town has. Medieval castle and great location on the river

Liked Super unkompliziert zu buchen. Wir mussten umbuchen, auch das war kein Problem.

Disliked Kleine Stellplätze , umständlich zu erreichen mit grossem Camper

Local attractions

On the road to Valencia de Don Juan, a five-minute drive from the site, is a water park with multiple pools, water slides and spraying mushrooms where the kids can turn into little prunes on hot summer’s days. The complex also includes an adventure course with routes for children and adults, and plenty of grassy areas in which to unfurl a towel. Explore the Monasterio de Santa María de Sandoval (35 minutes’ drive), taking in its decorative portal and simple stone cloister. Built in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, the monastery was abandoned in 1835 and slowly fell into disrepair. Stroll through the town centre in Léon (35 minutes), past elegant buildings with wrought-iron balconies and oversized windows. The Gothic cathedral comes with an ornate cloister lined with statues, while the Antoni Gaudí-designed Casa Botines houses artworks by the likes of Dalí and Goya.
