  • Peaceful Castile y León family campsite on the Camino de Santiago
  • A 10-minute drive to León; San Pedro de Eslonza Monastery, 20 minutes
  • Pine-shaded pitches; two swimming pools and a shop on site
When you’re looking for a peaceful base from which to explore the sprawling province of Castile y León, or needing a few days’ break from walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route, have a peek at Camping Ciudad de León. Tucked into pine forest 10 minutes’ drive away from the spectacular historic city of León, this family-friendly site also has plenty to offer for those days when you don’t want to move far from your tree-shaded pitch. As well as a playground for younger kids, there’s one outdoor pool for adults and a smaller one for novice swimmers (both open in July and August). You can keep everyone looking spick and span thanks to the laundry service and the plentiful supply of hot water in the modern facilities block. Pick up supplies for your trip in the site’s grocery store. Alternatively, head for the terrace bar and restaurant (both open from Easter to the end of October), where breakfast, lunch and supper are served daily. And when you’re ready for sightseeing in León? From the campsite into the centre of the city, there is one daily bus which leaves the site in the morning.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Toilets and showers clean. Had electrical hook up. Small shop in back of bar which opened at 7pm for a few hours.

Disliked Small unlevelled pitches, No water source to fill van, No chemical waste disposal point to empty toilet or grey water dump, Swimming pool filled with dark green water (advertised as not open). Awoken at 0530 due to large dogs barking outside site in nearby house, On arrival drove through derelict housing close to site which was unnerving on the way in. On arrival showed my booking with Pitchup to person in reception but he didn't acknowledge our booking and charged me more to stay than quoted by Pitchup.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had some difficulty finding the campsite, or rather, our navigation system did. We were there at the end of the season, so the site was okay, but nothing more. It was good that we were able to arrive later and spend the evening in Leon. Thanks for that 😊

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked Grubby site situated next to a virtually derelict, incomplete housing estate with graffiti. Acrid water in the pool. Restaurant and bar closed. Tiny pitch difficult to get into. Couldn’t wait to leave.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked It was a quiet site and the bar/restaurant had random opening hours. We are there one forming and it was basic but good value. We walked cross-country into the city. It takes about 1.5 hours at a slow pace. Shady pitches but narrow between first trees and we needed levelling ramps. Toilets and showers were OK but no soap in washroom, which I feel is unhygienic.

Disliked The ambience of the location is not very warm. There is a building site right next door with new houses being built. These had been left half-built for a whirl but now are being finished which is good news.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked We stayed for 2 nights in order to visit Leon. We had a friendly welcome, a good pitch and the facilities were modern and clean. On our first morning the timetabled bus failed to appear and the staff could not contact a taxi. This resulted in one of the managers giving us a lift into town in his own car which was much appreciated.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very quiet, decent enough facilities for an overnight stay, nice cold beer and simple restaurant when needed! We were there just before the pools were opened so can’t comment other than to say that they looked fine.
Decent location for Santander - about 3 hours drive so not too arduous either way.

Disliked Not the campsite’s fault, but there was a continuous noise of multiple dogs barking throughout the night (is there a boarding kennels nearby, maybe?) It woke us up a few times.

Local attractions

So… where to start in León? Head for the ancient Barrio Húmedo old town for a peek at the jewel-like stained glass in the soaring Gothic Catedral de León, and the Romanesque-era Basílica de San Isidoro, adorned with bright frescoes and an ornate, gilded altar. Admire Antoni Gaudí’s impressive Casa Botines and its colonnaded cloisters, and call in at museums of history and contemporary art. After all that culture, retire to a bar and recharge your energy levels with a selection of regional tapas and a glass of something chilled. When out and about discovering Castile y León, look out for the cliffside caves at Yacimiento Arqueológico de Las Cuevas Menudas, or stroll around the photogenic ruins of San Pedro de Eslonza Monastery (both 20 minutes' drive). If you’d rather explore on foot, you can glimpse views of the León skyline from Cuestas de Las Lomas Park (10 minutes’ walk), or scale hills and follow waymarked trails through dense forest along Las Cadenas hiking trail (20 minutes).
