  • Peaceful site in Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park
  • Castaño del Robledo 10 minutes’ drive and Aracena Castle 20 minutes
  • Outdoor pool, kitchen and local inn on site
Embedded deep in the rugged landscapes of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, and with many kilometres of trails in its surroundings, Eco Camping El Madroñal is fabulously peaceful site that makes a great starting point for all sort of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, mountain biking and Nordic walking. Set in a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees, this remote rural enclave stretches over 84,000 square metres, and the owners have received awards for their commitment to the preservation of the environment. And it's not just the environment that's well looked after here – guests are treated equally well, with access to an outdoor pool, a kitchen, picnic tables and an inn-restaurant that serves breakfasts and snacks throughout the year, plus full meals of local dishes in high season. And you'll need to be well fed here, because the site is surrounded by hilly trails leading out into the mountains or up to the nearest villages. Fuenteheridos (20 minutes’ walk) is a pretty mountain hamlet with whitewashed cottages and a generous sprinkling of bars and restaurants, while Castaño del Robledo (an hour’s walk or 10 minutes’ drive) is known for its spectacularly decorative 16th-century architecture. Local visitor guides with suggested walking and cycling routes, as well as popular places to visit, are available on site.

What customers say

This rural campsite offers a peaceful escape with friendly, helpful staff. Recent refurbishments have improved facilities, including clean toilets and pools. While some guests noted issues with signage, uneven pitches, and dated aspects requiring maintenance, manager replies indicate these are being considered. The site's natural setting is appreciated, though it can appear untidy out of season. WiFi connectivity is an area for improvement.

Electric forest floor pitch (premium)

Liked Location was quiet.

Disliked Almost everything.
We stayed one night on a 'premium' pitch on13th May and were not impressed with the site. Receptionist said they had only received our booking from pitchup on the day before and that it was for 2 adults and 2 kids, we have no kids and booked it before Xmas! She also informed us that the shop, restaurant and bar were all closed (their website said they were open).A young man took us to the pitches all of which were on a slope. After a few minutes he told us to 'Just park anywhere' and walked away. I tried to take a shower the next morning but after running the water for 5 minutes it remained cold after which I gave up. The ground is red dirt and it rained overnight so our gear was covered in red mud. We know is 'eco' but that shouldn't mean it can get away with saying anything it likes on their website.

Electric forest floor pitch (premium)

Liked Nothing, this camp site is scruffy, expensive, and almost derelict, not well maintained at all.
So bad we turned around and did not stay.

Disliked Everything, it's awful, unkempt and not welcoming at all.

From the manager: We are very sorry about your impression of our campsite. It is located in a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees, within the Sierra de Aracena Natural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Perhaps visiting us in winter, with its leafless trees, gave you that impression, as you only saw the entrance. The bathrooms are new and completely renovated.

Local attractions

This is a brilliant area for outdoor activities, so bring your boots or bikes along to make the most of the trails just around the site and in more far-flung areas like the Sierra Pelada y Ribera del Aserrador (an hour’s drive). For a gentler time, head to Embalse de Aracena reservoir (half an hour) for shoreline strolls and days of fishing. Many of the local villages are well worth exploring too – start with a wander around Fuenteheridos (20 minutes’ walk) and then plan outings to Castaño del Robledo (10 minutes' drive) and the 'white village’ of Linares de la Sierra (20 minutes). Aracena (20 minutes) is another good option, with a castle, an outdoor art museum and the huge Gruta de las Maravillas to visit. Fancy a change of scenery? Urban life is not far away – you can get to Seville or the coastal city of Huelva with a drive of less than an hour and a half.
