If you’re looking for beaches, natural landscapes and lots of wildlife in the Almería area, there can be few better areas to choose than the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, where hiking trails run past salt lakes and through cactus-dotted patches of desert. Occupying a fabulous spot within the natural park is Camper Área Cabo de Gata, a motorhome and campervan site about 25 minutes drive from Almería and within walking distance of the nearest beach. This well-equipped site is in the little village of Pujaire, just outside of Cabo de Gata – that puts several shops, restaurants and other amenities within easy reach. It’s about half an hour’s walk from the site to Playa del Charco beach, and there are lots of bird observatories around too (depending on the time of year, you should look out for flamingos, storks, egrets, kestrels, owls, lapwings and all sorts of other migratory and resident birds). As a site that’s dedicated to van-based travellers only, the pitches are specifically designed with motorhome needs in mind. Each spacious pitch has an electric hookup, and guests also have access to handy facilities including wifi, a launderette, shower and toilets as well as a campervan service area for grey and fresh water. Dogs are welcome, and there’s a dog park where they can have a bit of a run around.

Liked Spacious plots and friendly reception staff, Fatima. Decent facilities such as showers and toilets. Both clean. Plenty of dumping station space for 4 motorhomes.

Disliked Location a bit remote from anywhere. Not much going on in the locality. 30 minutes walk to the beach across scrub and marshland.

Disliked 3 nachten geboekt maar gelijk de volgende ochtend vertrokken.
Sanitair was te ranzig voor woorden.
Dame bij receptie zegt Engels te spreken maar maakt een combinatie van Spaans en Marokkaans. Er zat geen Engels woord bij.
Moesten ook 15 euro voor het stroom betalen.
Wifi is er niet ondanks dat je wel een code krijgt en het ook op de website vermeld staat.

Local attractions

The place to start is in Cabo de Gata village, about half an hour’s walk from the site. From here you can take a walk out to the headland, explore the salt lakes looking out for all sorts of visiting bird life, or sign up for snorkelling tours to see what lies below the surface of the sea. Alternatively, there’s a fabulous sandy beach stretching out for almost 12 kilometres… This whole area is blessed with lots of excellent hiking trails, but one of the best has to be the route around Crater del Hoyazo (half an hour’s drive), a landscape formed from an ancient fossilised coral reef and still harbouring glittering sapphires and garnets to this day. For more glimpses of this area’s scenery, take a stroll around Parque El Boticario botanic gardens (20 minutes), or explore the desert views at Cactus Nijar gardens (20 minutes). Those same views have also inspired the Oasys Mini Hollywood theme park (45 minutes), where southern Spain stands in for America’s Wild West at live shows and you can meet all sorts of animals from around the world.
